    Replacing Onboard Graphics

    Hi Guys,

i'm attempting to replace the faulty Geforce 6100 O/B VGA with an ATI X1950 pro,i realise i have to disable the onboard vga in the bios the problem is there isn't,as far as i can see a facility to do so only a facility to alter where the pc looks for a video signal from first, does anybody know how to disable the o/b vga,my Mobo is a ASUS A8N VM,would a 550W PSU be enough to run this card? it gives 18a on 12V1 and 17a on 12v2,i've taken the card out and as far as i can see it's not damaged all i get when i turn the system on( the card is powered and the fan operates) is DVI signal not present, the DVi cable is new, when i unplug the DVI and switch to VGA i get an image, albeit a very poor one, on the monitor,do you think the card is kaput and should i return it for a replacement?Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers

    Andy

If there's not an option in the BIOS, then there's probably a jumper on the mobo itself you need to move. Have a look in the mobo manual. In terms of power output, what make is the PSU?

    Hi,
I've downloaded a copy of the MOBO manual from Asus i'll have a flick through it to see if it sheds any light on the matter, the PSU model number is HEC 550-TD-PTE it's not a brand i've heard of the rig is a Mesh Matrix Athlon XP3800 dual core.

    Cheers

    Re: Replacing Onboard Graphics

You don't have to disable onboard graphics. As soon as the dedicated graphics card is detected, the onboard graphics are disabled, on 95% of boards anyway. Looks like your problem is elsewhere, probably that random PSU.

    Re: Replacing Onboard Graphics

If you haven't already then uninstall any previous graphics card drivers and install the latest ati ones. Pick the driver for your OS here.

If the on-board is enabled/working won't it just prompt you to reinstall the drivers on next reboot.

They disable themselves when a dedicated card has been installed.

    Re: Replacing Onboard Graphics

Does your PSU have a 6 pin PCI-E power connector? if it doesn't then what does your molex to PCI-E adaptor cable look like and are all the pins on the 6 pin all connected. The reason I ask is that I recently got an x1950 pro and I hard wired my card thinking that only 1 ground connection would be fine but it turned out that the card I had needed all 3 ground connections connected before the card would boot.
