Wireless lameness

Hi i'm trying to get my pc to work one a Orange livebox network.

I'm using Win XP home

I've got a Sweex 54 mbps card.

I rang Orange up and got a dude I didn't really understand due to his Indian accent and the quality of the telephone line signal wasn't the best...

1) Basically I set it up in paring mode like he said
2) I went (inside the, what I assume, sweex software) to site survey
3) Found the live box
4) Double clicked on it to reveal a configure network pop up
These had two drop down menus

Authenticate mode:

(these are the options)
Open system
Shared Key
Auto switch
802.1x
WPA - PSK (which is what it came up with as default option selected)
WPA2 - PSK
WPA
WPA2
CCX

Encryption Method
Which is diffirent for each mode!?

The live box uses a 26 alpha-numeric wep key to encrypt it.

How le ferkin hell do I get it to connect???

It should be the 'shared key' or the 802.1.x.

If possible you should change to WPA or WPA2 as WEP can be hacked easily.

I live in the middle of no where, can't imagine a farmer in his land rover hacking me on his laptop!

802.1x says I need a login name? Any ideas?

enter the security code for your router, which you'll find on a sticker on the base of the router

the router uses wpa-psk encryption...

ontopic, wpa-psk is the most common one. in the wireless settings on windows its most likely tkip, unless you specifically choose aes on the router.

yeah, hics never have laptops.

anyway, try setting it to WEP type encryption. alot of older wireless cards don't support WPA, hell, some don't support anything higher than 32bit encryption.

and, WPA really isn't that much more secure than WEP, both can be packet grabbed or brute forced. you have to realise there is basically two types of security in this world, that designed to stop your little sister reading your emails, and that designed to stop the NSA reading them... if you want the latter you should at least be using a RADIUS server

If anything is worth something on your network you wont use Wireless full stop.
To be honest if its worth alot you wont even have it near a network

Shared key is probably what you want, its what came as default for me.

Found out what the problem was just 5 mins ago, it was the crappy software that the wireless card came with, turned it off and used windows to connect the wireless and it was all good!

Turned the sweex software back on and bang lost the connection straight away, weird eh :S

lesson learnt
never use the software ones. more clutter on windows at startup.
