Clicking HDD

Hi all i have an little problem with my Seagate 500Gb hardrive,when its loading windows it makes a load clicking noise,even when i open say steam it does this,or when the drive is working.

I`ve quite a bit of data on the drive which i`d like to keep,so i`m a little worried that its going to fail.I`ve ran S.M.A.R.T through the speedfan program and the drive reports normal.

Any thoughts on what it can be i`ve even had to suspend the drive in my 5.2 drive bay as the noise was getting annoying.I`ve heard it could be something to do with it not getting enough power?

Drives in USB caddies that aren't getting sufficient power do make a loud clicking as the heads repeatedly load and unload, but in that case you don't get any data off them.

If you have a voltmeter to hand, you might want to check the 5V and 12V rails at the drive power plug, but unless you have added anything to the system to add to the load I doubt that power is the problem.

In your case I would think that the drive is mechanically damaged. If you have data on it that you want to keep, now is good time to get a replacement and clone the drive completely. If you don't have a spare drive large enough on hand, you should certainly back up critical data. Failing that, stop using the drive until you are in a position to clone it.

I think Seagates have a pretty good warranty, so once you have cloned it, you may be able to RMA it for a replacement.

Order on line and receive Tuesday. Cheaper and you wont be lining the pockets of the enemy that is PC World.
