Problem reading a dvd-rw. What format is it?

    Hi everyone.
Someone recorded a tv show for me recently, and I received the dvd from them this morning. However, even though the dvd drive on my pc spins the dvd up, when I double click on the dvd icon in 'my computer' it just comes up with the following error message:

"D:/ is not accessible. Incorrect function"

I also tried it on my standalone dvd player, and it won't load.
I'm assuming that they may have recorded it on a standalone dvd recorder, so wondered if there's a progam which may be able to help me download the dvd.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Use isobuster to create an image of it, and check if it picks up any file structure.

Isobuster has found a session on the dvd, along with 'track 01'. It also shows the files that have been burnt to the dvd. However, when I try to extract or run them, nothing happens.
    Any ideas?

Re: Problem reading a dvd-rw. What format is it?

I pressed the 'creat a managed IBP/IBQ image file' button in Isobuster, and it has created a number of files, one of which being the video that I wanted. I can open the IBQ file with VLC media player, but don't know how to convert the IBQ file to an mpeg file so that I can edit the video and creat a VCD.
    Any ideas?

try renaming the file extension to .mpg. Should be openable and editable.

That was the first thing I tried I'm afraid.
    It's a real head scratcher.

Get "g-spot" and open the file with it. Should tell you what codec it uses. Use that to work out how to convert it.

Lightbulb Re: Problem reading a dvd-rw. What format is it?

As you can read the disk with your drive. I would say that you are fine with regards to the type of DVD disk your drive can read.

Most normal standalone players will not play burnt disks.

I have come across the error at work recently, and that was put down to a bad drive. I would suggest trying it in another computer DVD drive.

'originaldon', I have managed to extract the file from the dvd, but I don't know how to convert it into an avi or mpg file, or a file type that a standalone dvd player will be able to read. That's my problem now.

I've also just tried to use g-spot, but it just comes up with the following:

    file type: unknown
    mime type: unknown

Any other ideas? I'm getting desperate now lol

I'd try using Virtualdubmod to open the .IBP/.IBQ file. If it will, you can then simply recode to .avi.

I've just tried virtualdub, but that program won't open the file either.
