No Signs of life from my old rig
Hi, I'm trying to resurrect my old rig. I say "old", it's actually only a about 2 years old, but has been out of action for the last 6 months due to a HD failure.
I bought a new SATA drive for it yesterday, fitted it, and now when I turn it on I get nothing. It powers up inside and the fans are spinning, but there is no output on the screen. What may prove be a big clue to the problem is that there is no beep at all coming from the mobo.
Any ideas please?
Re: No Signs of life from my old rig
dead cpu? tried a diff graphics card?
Re: No Signs of life from my old rig
Does it power on without the new SATA drive? Perhaps incompatible?
Re: No Signs of life from my old rig
yeah strip it down to the basics and see if you can get it to post then start adding stuff
Re: No Signs of life from my old rig
Does the SATA drive have a SATA150 jumper? might be all that is needed?
Re: No Signs of life from my old rig
Thanks for the responses, after some more messing I discovered it booted ok after I reset the CMOS.
The only problem is, I have to physically reset the CMOS before every time I turn the PC on. How weird is that?! I guess the BIOS is knackered?
Re: No Signs of life from my old rig
it seems more likely that the battery is 'knackered'....
Re: No Signs of life from my old rig
could well be - especially if the machine has been unplugged for a long time.
Re: No Signs of life from my old rig
Yes, that would make sense. As far as replacing the battery goes, do just take it out, buy one of the same specifications and plonk it back in, or is there more to it than that?
Re: No Signs of life from my old rig
Nothing more to it, pop the old one out, take it with you to Maplin so you can buy one the same, and pop the new one in when you get home, voila :)
Re: No Signs of life from my old rig
Yep a failing battery will give you all kinds of 'problems', You can pick up at battery almost anywhere. If you don't have a 'maplins' close then try B & Q or any other hardware store . :)

ebay might be the cheapest place.

It is likely to be a 2032 'coin cell' or similar - by the time you have bid on E bay, paid the p&p you might just as well nip down to the nearest Maplins/currys/boots/jessops/B&Q/Homebase/(even PC World :) ) etc etc and buy it! (If it is an exotic battery, then E bay might be a source although personally Id prefer to by a known branded battery from a reputable source!)
