    Re: Anti-virus & spyware

avast (or AVG) antivirus and zonealarm firewall are both excellent security programmes (and both free). I'd use spybot s+d and ad-aware along with it though (both also free).
I've used this setup for ~3 years now and i've never had a problem, though avast does seem to mis-detect some stuff for viruses, which i know are not.

    Re: Anti-virus & spyware

The only downside to ZoneAlarm free firewall these days is that Check Point acquired Zone Labs and they decided to cripple the free version in order to actively promote the pay for version (check the old newsgroups, the firewall in ZA Pro was no longer the same firewall used in ZA Free), it stopped being the same excellent product it once was. That's why I and many others stopped using it and switched to Jetico or Comodo, both admirably filled the shoes of the old ZA.

    Firewall Ratings - matousec.com

Out of the three free well known anti virus products available AntiVir is the only one that deals with virus and malware and actually makes a half decent stab at recognising and getting rid of it effectively. You could install AVG anti virus and AVG anti spyware but even the once excellent AVG anti virus has managed to bloat beyond original recognition.

    Re: Anti-virus & spyware

Comodo v3 is OK for Vista, but atm it's only just been released and some users are having problems - I'm waiting for it to get a bit more sorted. Meanwhile I'm using OnlineArmor Free and that has passed all the usual leak tests; also quite easy to understand, as it gives useful messages.
OA runs OK with Avast! but Comodo might not - no-one seems sure yet.
Once sorted, Comodo will probably be the best firewall available and does have some antimalware capabilities.

ATTN : CFP 3.0 Temporary Fixes

to be expected tbh, anything that jumps in size like Comodo has is going to get initial teething hassle.

    Re: Anti-virus & spyware

The jump in file-size was due, apparently, to the anti-malware whitelist; only a bit of it was due to the other changes.

I did actually try v3 on a spare disk. It allowed XP to boot about 10 - 15 secs quicker than with OnlineArmor. It seemed to work well for a while then started locking up things :-(
I'll try CPF again when the fixes are included.

Well all I can say is that's one mother of a white list

...I haven't installed 3 yet, I'm like you, I'll let it ride a while longer.

    Re: Anti-virus & spyware

Apparently it covers about 60% of apps. etc., so it will grow!

Yes, best to wait. I have the luxury of 2 HDDs and Seagate Disk Wizard; as 1 disk is a Maxtor, I can just clone the good disk. I had problems with a Linux distro as well as Comodo, so just copied the good set-up acroos - ultimate uninstallation!

    Re: Anti-virus & spyware

I got similar, I have a spare junk box i throw everything on and test, so I know what's what. I will get round to testing 3 out, just not sure when though

I got a friend who phoned the other day to say Comodo had updated seamlessly, and runs as sweet as before.

    Re: Anti-virus & spyware

yes, in C's forums there seems to be a split between those with problems and those who are OK. Allowing that problems will generate more posts, it looks as if CFP is working well for a lot of users.
    I'll still wait.

    Re: Anti-virus & spyware

ZA certainly slows the opening of apps - I noticed it after Comodo 2.4 (after trying CFP3 I went back to 2.4 but it wouldn't run, so ZA was the easy way out).
OA adds about 20s to booting time; CFP3 was Ok for booting and opening for a while, then...
OAs good for understanding what's going on without having to be an expert in FWs, but I'm keen to retry CPF3.

Never believe AS until you've done some research. The first place that I look is Spyware Warrior

Spyware Warrior: Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites

then look at some forums such as Wilders, CastleCops and Gladiator.
There are many 'security' apps. that are either malware or find false positives to try and sell you something.

A good FW (Comodo), AV (Avast!), common sense and a couple of on-demand scanners for spyware etc., then a decent, well set up browser and you'll be OK.
