new motherboard = new xp installation?
hi, my motherboard is fried, when i get a new one will the xp installation automatically recognise it or will i have to wipe the hard disk? i have no partitions ( i know silly ) so that would be a last case scenario.
i guess i could get another hard-drive at the same time as the motherboard, mine is relatively full, a
and so i could do a fresh install. would that mean i would have to reinstall all the programs again or would i be able to run the programs from the other drive as well? it sounds messy right now but could it be used as a stop gap measure?
thanks
Re: new motherboard = new xp installation?
It really depends on how different the boards are. It's generally deemed good practice when changing the board to go for a clean install, but it may well work enough for you to back any data up. And yes, yes you'll have to reinstall the programs otherwise you'll be missing all the registry details etc.
Re: new motherboard = new xp installation?
You`ll have to do a fresh insatallation of xp if changing a motherboard, yes i would get another hardrive and install xp on that,to save your other disk for storage.
Also you will have to re-install all of your apps.

If your xp installation is oem, you'll have to phone up ms and ask explaing your situation, asking for a new key. Oem versions only work for 1 mobo
But if it's a retail version you're all set if you use pepsi_max's link
Re: new motherboard = new xp installation?
Splash is correct. You may find that you can plug your drive into new m/b and it will work ok. You will just have to try it .
Re: new motherboard = new xp installation?
you can try, I changed moboz recently..windows did start up, but i got lots of errors....computer was horribly slow....so I did a clean install....

Too much registry stuff is left behind that doesn't get cleaned. Conflicts are common. Just reformat it :)
Re: new motherboard = new xp installation?
I would put the mobo in and start in safe mode - takes of all board, ide drivers (uninstall and physically remove the files if they aren't deleted.
Start windows again, let xp find everything as new hardware, remove all vital data and then do a fresh install,
pretty much the same as the link, I have done this on a number of occasions and as long as the HDD's aren't in a raid this should work.
