Re: Is it wise to use Vista yet?
Lucio - not being funny mate but what are you on about? The only time Vista 'looks' at XP is to let you choose it in your bootloader. Dual booting makes no difference whatsoever to Vista. DRM? Take off de tin foil hat mon! :)

Honest answer - Dunno! We had to shift from our crappy installer because of that issue. We now use NSIS (and sweet jesus it's great!) instead.
Re: Is it wise to use Vista yet?
I've recently built myself a new computer and I've had Vista x64 on it for a couple of months now and I must admit (being a Vista hater) I'm reasonably happy with it - scary I know, I still refer to it as Bisto because of my dislike for it!
Anyway, if you have a machine that's not exactly up to date, or not very much ram, then you are probably best sticking with XP. Almost anything works nicely with it and it runs efficiently with lower spec machines.
However, I find that Vista runs just as nicely as XP on my new machine. I personally have x64 business edition of Vista which is arguably the worst one of them alll - no media centre and the 64 bit version has even less drivers and more bugs than the 32 bit - but I'm still happy with it! I'm a bit of a gamer to say the least and with Vista I get to use all of the dx10 stuff with games such as Gears of War and Crysis and they look amazing!! I won't go into a list of games that I've got installed however all of them seem to work just fine. Well, except Bioshock, which for some reason plays with music but no sound effects?! Work in progress! Fair enough all the games I do have installed are quite reccent and I've yet to attempt anything that's more than a year old but I will let you know how that goes.
I imagine it all depends on how much effort you are willing to put it. Vista is coming and it will become more and more essential as Microsoft begins to reduce its attention on XP. More and more games that come out will use Vista components and if Microsoft have anything to say about it, will require Vista (Boooo Halo 2, although it will be about 20 years before we see Halo 3 on the PC - cmon Bill! You know you love your pc more!!) So if in a year or 2 you can be bothered to backup everything and put a new os on then go with XP for the time being, but if you want to make the most of the latest games (and yes I'm sure people will disagree and I know having detail settings on very high with dx9 are awesome but it's my opinion) and have the latest os and be prepared for the future etc etc then Vista is for you -but please for the love of Jebus, get as much ram in your machine as possible!!

Not really Vista's fault tho :O_o1:
Well aside from the above, them not being certified to run on Vista or crackpot protection schemes that pee off us legit game purchasers.
I am a legit game purchaser but like i said I have seen this happen on other peoples machines that arent. I love my FPS's too much to use the dodgy stuff :)
Re: Is it wise to use Vista yet?
I tested over 100 titles (all owned and perfectly legit) after purchasing Vista (Ultimate 64bit) and only a few failed to install. I can't remember all of the ones that failed but Longest Journey, Battle for Middle-Earth 2 and Fahrenheit spring to mind - they either wouldn't install (even under compat and/or admin modes), failed to run due to unsupported protection, or just hanged.
Like I said, the vast majority did play successfully - I really wish I'd kept a list - some required a bit of coxing but most were fine.
Performance is also a lot better than when it first came out. NVidia's drivers have matured a great deal, Creative's drivers are okay (at least they work) and I'm experiencing less slow-downs than I used to.
The following is a list of PC titles I have. If anyone wants to know if a specific title works under Vista Ultimate 64 bit, let me know and I'll post back here.

Re: Is it wise to use Vista yet?
I run an entertainment/publishing company. Our work goes from publishing magazines to run online servers for games.
We have about 50 PCs running XP or Server 2003.
The trial we did of Vista has been A DISASTER, 50% of device went crazy even with updated drivers, most games just don't run on Vista or present incredible graphic problems even with the latest GeForce8 video cards, X-Fi sound cards seems like they want to jump out the PC and escape ...
When XP came out we waited 18 months before putting it on production machines, for Vista I am predicting 24 months minimum.
So I'll say, maybe ok for normal users, absolutely not for professionals or those who has particular devices.
I also don't like the "reduced video quality" implemented by Vista to protect HD and Blue Ray content.
But, as I said, is normal for a new OS to present problems, part is also because device manufacturer do not design drivers properly. We will keep Vista on test machines and our engineers will keep working on it until is safe.
As many before me said, if you can afford it, buy it and put it on dual boot on your secondary PC, if not, stay with XP for a little while longer.
Re: Is it wise to use Vista yet?
I run Vista SP1 on my home Dell Inspiron 530 PC, I don't think it is as stable as XP on my work PC.
But Vista was free with the home machine so didn't want to pay the extra for XP only to move back again to vista in a 1-2 years time when it becomes the stadard OS. My home PC is quite powerful and I have a good video card so I don't need to worry about my machine chugging. Bring on Vista SP2!
Re: Is it wise to use Vista yet?
I've heard that Premiere 6.5 wont run on Vista. That's my reason for not investing.
Re: Is it wise to use Vista yet?
Re: Is it wise to use Vista yet?
too fancy for no real gains...
i actually disable DX10 in games... As soon as i can be bothered to slipstream my XP copy, i'm going back...
Re: Is it wise to use Vista yet?
I am running Vista Ultimate 64Bit on my rig in the sig below.
I am also running Vita Home Premium 32Biton my old laptop (Pentium M1.6 and only 512mb RAM) and its running fine and fast

All of these run fine on my Ultimate x64 box.
EDIT - for clarity, The Orange Box inc HL:E1 and HL:E2 are installed via Steam. Not sure if that would make any difference.
Re: Is it wise to use Vista yet?
I only just switched to Vista - about a week back. Hadnt done it before because drivers for some components where not available. But when I rechecked, everything was fine.
Mainly went for it because I had to do a reinstall anyway.
The install and setup was straightforward. And it works great. Boots into and hibernates quicker than XP for me. Most programs are also faster for me. But that is comparing it to a year old XP install - so an unfair comparison.
Have had absolutely no problems other than getting used to the slightly different interface. All sorts of problems I was having with XP just disappeared.
Re: Is it wise to use Vista yet?
mcfstep - For Bioshock have you tried enablings Stereo mixing on your sound card to get the sound to work? I think I had the same problem as you, did this and it works fine now. You'll know when it works as you get a Piano tinkle when you select items on the game setup screen.
Re: Is it wise to use Vista yet?
I have been backwards and forwards from Vista both 32bit Sp1 and 64bit Sp1 both Ultimate to Xp Pro Sp2 32bit.
I have consistently found Vista to be quicker in Windows based functions, More pleasant to use and more secure in that I noted less spyware on my system after a months usage.
Now to the bad points.
The way it babies me gets on my nerves yeah you can turn it all off but things like Crysis won't install Sandbox on 64bit no matter what I tell it.
My 3dmark score in Xp is 15401, in Vista I dropped to 13,870. My jaw thudded on desk when I saw that, a huge drop.
This said though I am on XP now, I have had to remove a trojan of which AVG did not detect until a scan, It is slower and slower on startup no matter how I tweak it, the GUI is boring and since I am gaming less and on forums more I am wondering why I am putting up with Xp at times.
It's a tough choice and I do tend to spend 2-3month on XP then 2-3month on Vista and move back and forth.
Anyone else like me?
Re: Is it wise to use Vista yet?
one solution - dual boot...
Re: Is it wise to use Vista yet?
I only have 250GB available, and my games take up about 60GB, mp3's about 40GB then you have Office, graphic work, photo and the OS software.
Never enough space....still I have my main stuff all nicely backed up for a quick restore.
