    Halp, me compy just...

    ...died!

Working fine, rebooted and didn't POST. No flash of 3 lights on keyboard (I don't have a buzzer, so the beep to those that use that), monitor stays in standby!

Specs to the left. Could it be that my mobo just died on a reboot? Seems aweful strange. What should my course of action be? .

Hope I don't have to get replacement mobo . PC is only a few months old.

    Pre-emptive thanks to any replies!

ps. I've tried disconnecting all devices and leaving it for an hour or two while I watched Twins on ITV2, but it didn't want to fix itself xD.

Could of overheated, try resetting the cmos by the jumper (see manual) or take out the battery for a while

Are the fans spinning ? or no ?

If it's not making any 'fan' or 'hard disk' sounds then it could well be the PSU thats died.

I'm not intimate with that motherboard, buy my ASUS board has an LED on it that shows there is power on the board, do you have such an LED ? is it lit ?

Sorry, forgot to mention. Yes, all fans are spinning, the LED is lit too, and the cpu heatsink gets warm if i leave it on for a bit.

disconnect everything that isn't needed - hard drives, rom drives, usb devices, all pci cards, memory and see if it come up to the BIOS. if that doesn't work try another graphics card. After that you're into faulty cpu/motherboard/power supply territory.

    Re: Halp, me compy just...

All fans + CPU heat, check... Got speakers ? does it normally make a sound when it boots up ? you know the little windows piano jingly thing you get when you reach the desktop ? Do you get that ?

With fans + cpu heat + sound (if you get it) then I would be looking at either the monitor, monitor cable, or graphic card.

If your not getting sounds that you normally get when it boots to the desktop, then it's going to be hard to diagnose without the 'error beeps at post' kind of information...

Again, Im not intimate with that board, but if you look in the manual, it will give you some idea how the post errors are reported, some use a sequence of LED blinks, some use beeps, and some use audible messages using the built in sound card if it has one, this post information would probably help you narrow down your search rather than having to try lots of components to find the fault.

If you can't find the way to get any POST information then killie99's suggestion is the best way to go, remove all non-essential hardware and leave only the PSU, motherboard, CPU+fan, 1 stick of RAM, graphic card and monitor, check and see if you get a POST message on the screen when you try and boot it.

If you still get nothing when you try it the first time, pull the stick of RAM out and try the other stick to see if that helps.

If the computer posts, it will report there is no boot disk, cause you have disconnected the HD, but if you get this far then you know it's something you have disconnected thats causing the problem, you can then shut down and reconnect things one at a time starting with your HD and see how far you get before it fails to start again.

    Re: Halp, me compy just...

Thanks peeps, i'm at work at the moment. I've left the mobo battery out while i'm here and i'll check it when I get home. Sema4: It isn't POSTing, not even with no devices connected. So I wouldn't get as far as windows .

The Num lock/Caps lock/Scroll lock lights would normally flash upon bootup as the sign of life. They aren't now .

Took the PC speaker off my old case (new one don't have one). Zero beeps. I'm guessing this has to be the motherboard dead then? What should my course of action be? (Purchased from Scan 21st Aug).

Interesting thread here on this board not booting Asus P5K-E wifi stable but randomly won't POST suggesting the bios version is critical if using a quad core (which you are) with this motherboard - see near the bottom of the page.

    Re: Halp, me compy just...

I have this problem regulary when overclocking.

All i do is unplug the power, turn off the power supply and then take off the CMOS jumper and put it on the far right two pins.

    Leave it for 30 seconds.

Replace it to it's original position.

    That's works for me.

zero beeps seems like the motherboard to me, pull all the memory, boot with none and see if that beeps at all. If not I think its the motherboard.

had done this many times, but tried it again just now out of a "well it's been a while now and I ain't touched it for ages, so lets have a look...." curiosity.

....as I linked the two power pins of my naked P5K-E on top a cardboard box on the floor with a screwdriver for the zillianth... presto! It beeped madly. I put one stick of ram back in, it booted... I put the other back in... it booted... i put it all back together in it's smexy p180b.... it booted. Wahey, on it now! Quite odd. I think it was cheered up by the Duke Nukem Forever teaser and decided to work again.
