Laptop will not boot.

Hello,

My colleague's, sister's, laptop... is not happy.

From what she's said, it's decline appears to be hard-disk related.

Seeing as my PC has run happily for roughly 4 years now I haven't done any trouble shooting in that time... I just want command prompt, so I can run chkdsk c: /f but cannot for the life of me remember how to get there .

Do I need to install the recovery console or is there an easier way. I cannot get into Windows itself.

Boot into the windows cd and press r for the recovery console which gives you the prompt. chkdsk from there, fixboot and fixmbr could be worth a shot as well.
