    speakers dead

I've got creative i-trigue 5600 5.1 speakers and they just conked out on me. They stopped working yesterday but i thought nothing of it as my pc just bsod'd. I've been probing around with a voltmeter and it's definitley not the fuse or transformer.

Any suggestions as to what it could be?

    thanks

Do the speakers work with a different sound source?

It may be that whatever caused the BSOD also damaged the sound card installation - try re-installing the soundcard drivers.

    Re: speakers dead

it's not the sound card. I've tried the speakers on a diff source (didn't work) and a different set of speakers with the same sound card(did work).
The wee LED on the volume control which comes on when you turn the speakers on isn't working either. And inside the volume control there seems to be a lot of bare wire where they exit the volume control to go to the sub. Maybe it's shorted out

    Re: speakers dead

How old are they? If they are in Warranty, RMA them - if not you may have to do a bit of digging around (depending on your electronics competency ) Were you playing them loudly? (Unfortunately the build quality of Computer speakers tends not to be that good (OK - sweeoung generalisation) so if they are operated at high volumes for any length of time, it can damage them.

The fact that the LED doesn't come on although the PSU is delivering power indicates that it may be internal (internal fuse) although it might be worth checking the PSU voltage with it connected to the speakers (but that will probably involve opening the speakers - which would invalidate any warranty)

    Re: speakers dead

I've had them for about 2 years or so, and got them off a friend 2nd hand, so no warranty as far as i know. I've been inside and all internal fuses seem fine, none are blown. The volume is never over half, and other times i use a headset.

I might be able to get another volume control for ~£5 so i'll see if that makes any difference. If not i guess it's back to probing around with a multimeter and hoping for the best
