Fried HD Controller and Servo, Help needed getting data off platters
Afternoon all.
Plugged my media drive into my external caddie last night and got that ominous silicon / solder smell.
2 components had fried and burst and spewed their contents.
The drive is a Maxtor 500GB. model: STM3500630AS.
Can anyone tell me were to find a servo and actuator arm and a control card for this drive. The platters are fine and are spinning up, but the arm is not moving over.
Seagate are about as helpful as a dead dog.
Any help is much appreciated, and if anyone knows a data recovery place with a clean room near Warrington/Manchester/Liverpool can you let me know.
Cheers All

I've got 2 more, but its the data I need desperately
Re: Fried HD Controller and Servo, Help needed getting data off platters
hence me saying buy a new one and use it as a donor drive to recover the data.
if you look into it ( i have done this before) you will find sites offering parts from matching drives, but they often cost more than the drive itself if its still up for sale, hence me saying get a new one, but if you have a matching one its worth using if the data is important.
data recovery is a great business to be in as the customers are always desperate, unless your a business that really cocked up its backups then its not worth considering. you will pay through the nose even to use a clean room.
if you google around a bit you will find sites (que other hexus users to post links) that tell you the best way to recover data. you can do it yourself, but as rule of thumb a ghetto data recovery is enough to get the data off the drive, but scrap the drive once the recovery is done as it will in no way be stable to use again as your bound to contaminate the platters when you start replacing parts.
if the part numbers match its worth backing up the data on a matching drive and transplaning the platters.

i've got use of a clean room, so I think next weekend its a trip to bowlers to pick a drive up cheap as the 2 i got yesterday are filling up.
incidentally i got it spinning up last night with a new control board just the heads were clunking every second.

this is not meant as a flame however this post should be an example of why people should backup data. Considering that another 500GB drive can be had for as little as £65 its simply stupid to put critical data on a single drive (RAID is also not always the answer despite many saying it is). I deal with preventing such issues with my employer and their 120TB of data...and growing, its a nightmare
Fella, I sincerely hope u get ur data off that drive without paying vast sums to the recovery vultures...I mean companies :)
