Computer cut out and will not start

Hey there,

My computer just cut out and will not start now. When I press the on button, the LED's on my case fan, light for a split second. There is a light on my mobo that is on though. Did my PSU die or what? I really need my computer for revision for January exams, so any advice will greatly be appreciated.

Specs:

Power Supply: FSP 350-60MDN with 350WDC output, with 22A on 3.3V rail, 21A on 5V rail, and 25A on 12Vrail.

Asus P5GD1 -
P4 540 3.2GHz HT 1MB L2 cache
2 * 512MB DDR PC3200
X1950pro 256Mb
250GB SATA Hard drive 7200RPM
1 DVD drive
1 DVD-RW / CD-RW drive
memory card port thingy :/ xD

personalyl id say your rig seems underpowered considering your running a p4 and x1950pro, but try going barebones (cpu, ram, hdd, gfx) first with one stick of ram and see what happens.

I think it is most likely the PSU that just died, because the computer was running absolutely fine before, and games were running perfectly well on high settings for about a week since I got the x1950 pro. When I press the on button nothing happens at all, nothing makes any noise, nothing is running xD

I'll go out and buy a new PSU tomorrow, only thing I can really do. Just a bit suprised that my PSU would suddenly die like that :/

Was it on and then cut out or have you just attempted to start it from cold?. Choppiy's barebone suggestion is sensible, but make sure you check all connections from the psu to make sure something hasn't come out to cause the power loss.

Do you have access to another psu to test with?

Nope, nothing happens at all in the slightest, although the LED on the motherboard still lights up when the plug is in, apart from that nothing xD

EDIT: Nope, no other PSU to test with

Take the PSU out and short the green and black pins on the ATX header with a paper-clip or something - Does the fan start up? (Don't connect anything else to it, just in case)
If not, its 100% dead

Sounds like the PSU died.
It's quite possible for it to fail & yet still light the standby LED on the mobo - I had 1 go like that over Xmas.

It could also be the power switch on the front of the case. Open up the case, then look for where the wire comes from the front of the case to the motherboard header. It can be either part of a block of connectors or a separate little connector.

The motherboard will probably be marked PWR, there are two pins, short the two with a screwdriver. Hold the screwdriver on the pins for a few seconds (its v v low voltage so you will be fine). If this powers the machine on then you need a new switch on your front panel.

Alternatively, if this does power up the computer. You can go into your BIOS and set it up so that pressing any key on the keyboard starts the computer...it has to start for you to do this of course though.

(most likely the PSU is dead though)
