    xp sp2 download problem

    Hi again all,

A friend of mine is having the following problem following a repair of windows through rcovery console.
When trying to download sp2 (or in fact try to access anything on the site) he progresses only so far before reaching a page stating that the website has a problem. This has been happening for two weeks now and i cant see microsoft having a fault on a website for two weeks? i have tried on my pc and no website fault is reported.

There is no contact info available throught the pages he accesses.
I can retrieve helpline numbers but they charge £46.00 and e-mails requests are restricted to two per customer and the address is hidden so i cant pass it to him. I don't want to use my two e-mail requests for his pc in case i ever need them.

Before my friend pays out for help from microsoft does anyone have experience of this type of problem.

    Thanks

Not much of a repair, huh. ...try repairing again....but run CCleaner (clearing cache/TIF/cookies, etc) and then try repairing the browser first: how to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer in Windows XP - method 3.

Assuming you are dead sure he doesn't have SP2 already.

Possibly a silly suggestion, but why not just download the redistributable version and stick it on a CD or USB key?

Is his a genuine copy and not a naughty naughty CDR with a license key scribbled on the disc? i've seen these symptoms on pirate copies is all.

    Re: xp sp2 download problem

DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate download is now available on Windows Update. The best way to ensure you get Windows XP Service Pack 2 is by turning on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP today. You can use our step-by-step instructions or, if you prefer, let us do it for you.
Do that as a next step/last resort. It's not strictly for slapping on a single PC hence it's size and it can cause problems - i've been bitten in the recent past, which is why I didn't mention it straight off. Try first route first. Potentially less destructive at least.

    Re: xp sp2 download problem

    Hi all thanks for replies.

He has the original windows xp disc that came with pc and it appears to be a genuine copy. Gold in colour with holograms. The product key is on the accompanying windows booklet.

I will try your advice tomorrow godsdog and update post soon.

    Thanks again
