System locking up when LAN cable removed.
mb: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L (rev. 1.0)
q6600 G0 @ 3gHz / 333 x 9
2gb ddr2 800
gf8800 GT
ocz 600w psu
Using win xp pro 32bit sp2.
The system totally locks up only when i go to dissconnect the LAN cable, and resumes as normal if i replace the LAN cable, otherwise i need to press the reset button. Ive never had this happen with any other pcs, what could be causing it? Ive updated network card drivers to latest version (im using the onboard lan)
Could it be a bug with this motherboard or maybe a hardware fault? Im going to check if the bios needs updating but im pretty sure its the latest version already. Is this a known issue with this board?
Apart from this its totally stable, the only time it locks up is when LAN cable is taken out.. and it makes a strange sort of continuous buzzing sound, like as if its cought in an endless loop, and only stops when reconnecting the LAN cable. :undecided
Re: System locking up when LAN cable removed.
Very strange issue. I too would have gone for the driver option first. Sounds like it could be something inherent to the mobo, which suggests a BIOS update (as you say).
It is possible that its a Windows issue, windows does break in weird and wonderful ways. Have you got a spare network card you can plug in just to test this?
Re: System locking up when LAN cable removed.
It could be a virus/trojan uploading data and if you block the upload i.e disconnect, it locks up the system. Have you scanned lately?
Re: System locking up when LAN cable removed.
Wierd! Can you tell where the buzzing sound is coming from? Motherboard? Speakers?
Re: System locking up when LAN cable removed.
Odd... Might be worth trying a linux livecd to see if the issues are replicated in another OS. If they are I'd possibly be looking for a short - check your motherboard mounting, it could be that having the cable in place is enough to lift the board away from the short.
Do you get the buzzing sound when in the BIOS if the cable is disconnected?
Re: System locking up when LAN cable removed.
Remove the old LAN driver, download and install the lastet realtek 8111 LAN driver:
version 5.686.0103.2008 or up for XP
europe.giga-byte.com/FileList/Driver/motherboard_driver_lan_realtek_8111.exe
version 6.202.0125.2008 or up for Vista
europe.giga-byte.com/FileList/Driver/motherboard_driver_lan_realtek_8111_vista.exe
Same problem solved:mrgreen::mrgreen:
