DVD-Rom and HDD on same IDE Cable?

    Hello guys.

Installed a new motherboard yesterday and it only had one IDE port as it's mainly a sata board but what ever.

So I put my DVD Rom and HDD on the same IDE cable and for some reason my bios wont detect master and slave. I'm no expert with this master and slave stuff so I can barely understand it. Is there a way to configure master and slave?

Also, when my PC boots up I can see my DVD drive light flashing for quite as if it's set to master. If I leave a disk in the drive and boot up again, it'll get past the windows XP splash screen but after that the screen will just stay black. (First boot device is HDD in bios...)

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Re: DVD-Rom and HDD on same IDE Cable?

    Code:
    |=== master (put hdd here) (usually black)
    |
    |
    |=== slave (put cdrom here) (usually grey)
    |
    |
    |
    |
    |=== into motherboard (usually blue)
make sure to set the jumpers on the harddrive are set to Master, and on the cdrom are set to Slave.

you wont get great performance like that, its always best to have the hdd on a separate cable to cd/dvd drives

Have you checked the jumpers on the back of the HDD / DVD drive? This should be set as per your requirements.

I believe there are three settings: primary, secondary or auto.

These could be mis-configured and therefore causing you issues.

    Edit: Beaten to it

    Thanks for your replys.

So on the back of the HDD/DVD there will be jumper settings if I understand correctly?

Best advice is look at the sticker ontop of each unit. There should be a nice diagram explaining which position corresponds to which setting.

You can also do a quick check in the BIOS, it should tell you what is connected as which!

Re: DVD-Rom and HDD on same IDE Cable?

The colours of the connector don't matter unless you are using cable select (which is rare). There are three combinations for setting the drives - master, slave and CS (cable select) set the HDD to master (which is probably how it is already configured) and set the DVD to slave. Performance will be fine - until SATA it is how things were always done!

As and when you replace the HDD with a STAT device, change the jumper on the DVD to master (assuming it is the only drive connected to the IDE port.)

I've always had my cd/dvd drive on a separate cable to my Harddrives..

    ie

    IDE0 -- master (hdd1), slave (empty/hdd2)
    IDE1 -- master (dvd1), slave (empty/dvd2)

for best performance... or am i wrong lol?

No, not wrong, but as the OP only has one IDE port, that isn't an option.
