If you are talking about a file you have downloaded then no.

Why wouldn't it? I would expect an .iso burnt as an image under pretty much any OS to work in different OSes *provided* it was burnt as an image. If you just dump the .iso file on the disc then no, it won't work under any OS.

An .iso is a disc image, nothing more.

Is the question asking whether Vista can burn ISO images?

As Splash says, an ISO is just an image, thus as long as the CD data itself (that the ISO is from) can be used under XP then it doesn't matter what OS the burning was done under is.

An ISO is an ISO is an ISO - common burning application software (such as Nero on a Windows platform) will burn it to the CD regardless of the underlying operating system, Windows, Mac OS or Linux. The CD will be readable by all operating systems too (it is an ISO) although the data on it might not be useful. (ie, I can burn a Linux ISO on a windows machine, and mount and read it, but Windows won't be able to do anything with some of the files on it - and vice-versa)

I have known my brother (the little git) to d/l games ISOs and when he has burnt them under Vista they wouldnt run as they were turned into ISO using XP.

Im quite glad aswell...Thieving little swine! I'll 'shop him'next time.....

Vista/XP/MacOS/linux doesn't burn the ISO - it is the application software that burns it so a version of Nero running on Vista should produce a disc identical to one burnt by nero under XP. (But you could test it by burning the same ISO on two machines - one with Vista, one with XP) and then do an md5 hash on the finished CD from both machines. Compare that with one burnt using an app running on linux.

Blitzen - that would be a good test for you to see what your brother is doing.

When he went to run it, the disk told him it could only run i XP.

Im quite glad actually as he's better off than me and still tries to copy stuff.

He asked for a bit of advice and i told him that when he stops effectively stealing this stuff then i might take a look.

Interesting - I wonder if that was a disk application, rather than the disk burning? (He downloaded the wrong version for his OS) As I say, the only way to tell is to burn a disk from an identical source on the two OS's and then do a hash on the resulting disks.

you could just extract the iso file with winrar or such and then just burn all the files inside the iso like you normally would

Thats what made me think that the original ISO image was created using XP.

Im just summising but i cant think of another explanation.
