Re: To RAID or not to RAID

Could I put the raid drivers on a normal CD, install XP then run the CD during boot up and install them that way?

Im interested in giving RAID a go, whats to lose eh?

Re: To RAID or not to RAID

And what if I wasn't able to use nLite?

Is there another way of doing it?
Could I put the raid drivers on a normal CD, install XP then run the CD during boot up and install them that way?

Why wouldn't you be able to use nLite? It's incredibly easy to use.

Re: To RAID or not to RAID

I probably would be able to use it but ive never looked at or used it, so how easy is it to use etc and a slipstream CD, is that just a CD with all my drivers and stuff on it so i run this to install XP instead of my usual CD?

Re: To RAID or not to RAID

    Process is essentially

    load nlite
insert your Windows XP cd, and point nlite at it
make a cuppa while nlite caches your data
while the kettle's boiling download the raid drivers and dump them somewhere
back to nlite, tell it that you want to integrate drivers, then point it to the drivers you downloaded
tell it to burn to cd, put blank cd in drive
finish off your cuppa while nlite burns your new, slipstreamed XP install disc

That really is it. I've had more diffculty falling off logs in the past.+

EDIT - you can also create an automated install using nlite, but that's for another day.

And yes, this creates you a new, integrated Windows CD

Re: To RAID or not to RAID

No - nlite will cache the data off your XP CD, then you remove it and insert a blank CD (I'm assuming you have a CDRW drive, otherwise you'd struggle to write the drivers to a CD in the first place) to burn the completed article to.

Provided they are textmode drivers, yes. You also need to be careful to only integrate drivers for your OS (ie don't put both 32bit and 64bit drivers for a bit of kit in there.)

Textmode drivers - the ones that aren't PnP. Once you've downloaded and installed nLite it might make sense - they're the ones you can integrate. What else were you thinking of integrating? If it involves running an .exe chances are it won't work (unless there's some sort of command line switch to unpack the executable)

Re: To RAID or not to RAID

I was thinking more of drivers that come on the Motherboard Disc?

Obviously sound and graphics drivers wouldn't be added, does creating a slipstream CD completely remove the user from the installation process or does the user still need to enter the CD Key?

Re: To RAID or not to RAID

The only difference to the install as detailed above is that you shoudl be able to install to an SATA drive without having to faff with a floppy disk. You can make tweaks to the integrated install to make it as automatic as you like - from fully interactive (like it is at present) to fully integrated (with your CDkey done automatically, users created, static ip set or whatever), but I'd suggest you start by integrating your drivers and then have a look at the nLite website for info on the more complex stuff.

    nLite FTW...

I've got my RAID drivers, nforce drivers, and nvidia drivers all integrated onto one cd, makes a reinstall a piece of cake
