    XP Start Up

    Hey all,
Basically XP as usual was very fast at startup from when i entered the password till all items were loaded...however now...only a week after a fresh install and very few program installs it seems rather slow... only the essentials are being loaded at startup, anti virus, sound controller...pretty much it... It seems to hang for about 30 seconds and this is after its loaded the anti virus icons...then after its hang it loads the wireless connection and network icons... I know this isn't much of a hassle but as you can see my system is rather meaty and from wot i paid for i kinda expected it to be faster. CPU usuage also never peaks beyong 15ish...and help would be appreciated

Is there any network activity during that 30 seconds 'hang'?

Worth checking all entries in Event viewer, might have logged something.

    Re: XP Start Up

An event was logged at startup...
    Says:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
    nvport
    Event ID: 7026
Anything to do with this you think?

    Re: XP Start Up

"Service Control Manager System Event Log shows Event ID 7026 "The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load %1", then lists them. "

That should be the message you got and if it is you need to find these drivers by going to: MyComputer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager>View>Show Hidden Devices, and they are there with a yellow shield with an exclamation mark on them.

    Here is what you do.

Remove 1 failed device. (ONLY 1 at a time)
    Reboot.
Check to see if it has returned.
If it has not returned after reboot it probably does not exist on your system.

Repeat until you get rid of all non-existent devices.

When you have completed this go to the control panel and run the Add New Hardware Wizard. It will find any missing devices and add them but it does not remove devices that are already there even though they failed thats why you have to do it manually.

An important reason to do this is each of these failed devices uses a small signature of memory and slows your computer. It also slows boot time and shutdown time.

    Re: XP Start Up

okay...problem not fixed...now there are no failed or nonexistent devices...no red or yellow marks on the system log and yet it takes over a minute to load... and then i still have to wait for about 30 seconds until my wireless internet icon pops up and starts connecting...anyone got any ideas?

    Re: XP Start Up

what AV are you using? I've seen this with Norton where you have to uninstall and reinstall to fix it.

I've also seen this happen with Nero, it has a search service that was trying to load at startup.

    Re: XP Start Up

Start>run...type msconfig and go to startup

List the programmes on here that are starting (ticked boxes) and we can get an idea what the problem might be

    Re: XP Start Up

Okay after a reinstall and reformat... after entering my password on start up the welcome screen stays there for about 7-10 seconds before windows slowly begins loaded...hardly any startup items so the only thing i can think of it something to do with norton and my wireless adapter...this is the only message appearing in the system event log:
Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0016B6970662. The following error occurred:
The operation was canceled by the user. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.
Is there anyway i can assign a fixed address or do anything to fix this...it is really annoying

    Re: XP Start Up

    It's Norton...gotta be.

If it gets bad when it's installed (and lets be honest, what is ever improved by Norton?) then it's the cause.

If yu want a fised Ip Address do as follows (but sadly Norton is pooh, and you mioght wanna drop it and get somwething else)

    Start>Control Panel>Network & Internet Connections>Network Connections

    Find your Wireless connection.

    Right Click> Properties

    double click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"
Click the USE THE FOLLOWING IP ADDRESS and put your own one in

    Prolly 192.168.1.xxx <---your choice here
but you'll need to know your DNS servers for your ISP and put them in the lower box (two of them)

If it doesnt work you can go back to the original settings by clicking the auto boxes again
