Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
Which version of Windows?
What was the last thing you did before it stopped working?
Have there been any other odd sysmptoms in the last few days/weeks before this happened?
Do you have any A V software installed - is it up to date?
If you need to access the hard drive urgently, either get a mate with a computer and install your drive in there as a secondary drive (if its IDE) or get a USB caddy for the drive (IDE or SATA depnding on the disk interface) and again plug it into a mate's computer and get the data off it that way. That is less invasive of your mate's machine.
In either event, make sure yoir mate has an uptodate virus checker, and scan the drive - completely - before accessing any data or executing any other programs.
An alternative would be to boot the machine with a Linux live CD and access the data on your hard drive that way.
If you order a caddy from Scan tonight, with express delivery, it should arrive Friday morning. (Although carrigae will be almost as much as the caddy)
If you have a mate with a fast internet connection, you could download a live CD (I like Knoppix - fwiw - but given the urgency, now is NOT the time to debate the relative merits of live distros) overnight and burn it to CD/DVD ready for use tomorrow.

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
I had this problem last week.
You didn't happen to put a new graphics card into a mobo that has onboard graphics and a crappy bios did you?
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
Is it a black screen or does the monitor loose connection? ie does it go into standby after a few seconds? If it's the latter it could be trying to display an incorrect resolution or it might be knackered and can only just manage VGA resolutions.
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
ok its not the screen definatly and i no i havent put a new gpu in recently. im using windows medica center 2003. before the problem i was trying to log on ! i couldnt log on, beacuse the computer just froze on my screensaver, so i restarted the computer and it started to freeze after the logo and the mointer turned black.
i did change hard drives and it started, so ive limited down the options to a virus, or OS has died. i did manage to get onto safe mode one time when i couldnt log on, (before it got stuck on the black screen) i found my A V was for some reason disabled, when i clicked on it it came up with a message saying error, so having a virus is a huge posibilty
is it possible to wipe a hard drive beafore logging into the computer ? i dnt really want to buy a new one ..

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
Quick tip on posting...
Use punctuation and reasonable sentence construction.
Avoid text speak.
The ellipsis (...) is no substitute for the enter button - and too many smilies in inappropriate places tend to distract from the subject!
Make it easy for the people who want to help you :)
Right - back on topic. My next thought was that it could be a virus, which was why I asked you about AV protection and stressed that before you connect the disk to any machine, it should be virus checked.
It is possible to scan a disk - one of the better ways is to boot the machine from a Linux live CD and either download one of the free ones (F-prot is one) and run that. Of course the machine will have to remain powered up the whole time because the OS is being run from the CD.
If you want to wipe the hard drive (that is - completely over write whatever data is on it) then you can do that - again with a live CD, or just do a fresh install of Windows from your Windows install CD. Again you are running a system off a CD, and doing all disk operations that way, and it is unlikely that any executeable code will survive that process.
Good luck!

but im confused with what to download onto my empty disk ..
and what are "kernel with aufs and squashfs modules"
do i just install the scripts ? or are the "kernels" needed on the CD to.
thanks

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
Ah - no - you have downloaded some scripts that are usefuul on an already running linux system!
You need a live distribution
KNOPPIX Linux Live CD is one (the developer is German, but switch to the English flag and all becomes clear. You should go to the download page and select a mirror to download from - there aren\'t any in the UK, but that doesn\'t matter - they all contain the same files. For your purposes, you probably only need the CD version.
Other options are Ubuntu and many others, but it is the Live CD/DVD version you need.
Download it - the file will end in a .iso extension, and then burn it to a CD or DVD - just double clicking the file in Windows should bring up the burning software.
Once you have burned the CD, you then set the bios on your computer to boot from the CD - and then restart it with teh CD in the CDROM drive. You will then have a working computer system that isn\'t using the hard drive for its operation. You use this system to transfer the files from your hard drive to wherever.
Post back when you have a CD - or if you have a any problems obtaining it.

If you do that what is the very last thing (ie at the bottom) that shows on the loading screen? I've seen this problem in the past with borked graphics drivers and it can take a LONG time to pass this point (I've seen it take 30 mins or more, you just have to stick with it). Load into Safe Mode (as I say, it'll take a while potentially) and the try a system restore.

The second file is an md5 checksum that you can use to verify that the file has been downloaded correctly - I wouldn't normally say this - but don't bother with it - just download the first and burn it to CD.
Try Splash's sufggestion first though!

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
ive just tired your disk idea, no good same problem as before just goes black , it boots up the disk no problem. what does this mean ? virus ?
splash your idea was to boot into safe mode right ? and just wait for it load up ?
beacuse when i boot into safe mode it gets stuck on:
windows/system32/drivers/mup.sys
shall i just leave it for a while ?

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
Yes - the next driver to be loaded will be either AGP440 or the ACPI driver. I've seen this a few times and it's always been fixed by leaving the machine until safe mode loads fully, then running system restore. It takes ages, but patience is a virtue.

how old is the p5p 800 (asus) ?

You did enter the bios and set it to boot off the CD? It is unlikely that there is a virus on the CD - and you are not accessing the hard drive at that stage - and not executing any code from it.
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
still on mup.sys , been around 50mins so far .....
yep it definatly 100% booted from disk only. and it still didnt work. so whats that limiting the problem to ? ......
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
If it booted straight to the black screen then either a) your machine isn't booting from CD or b) you didn't burn that ISO as an image and you just copied the file to CD.
Anyways - it could still be a fair while longer - I've seen it take more than 2 hours but given that it's your best chance of getting the machine back in working condition without a reinstall of sorts then you'll just have to be patient I'm afraid. I'm just hoping you're not one of these people the turns off System Restore as a waste of space (Given how cheap hard drives are these days I really cant understand the logic in that argument)

i did that in the past, hehe i read it helped so i did it then when my computer died i couldnt go back, i havent done the same since. lol i leant my lesson, k i will leave it all day if i have to. i definatly burnt it as an image, im postivie it said burning image, and i definalty made it run the disk. . .

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
Ok - so when you boot off the CD - what exactly happens?
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
The file that your machine is struggling to load is the display driver. Until that initialises there's very little going to happen.
But as peterb said - what exactly happens during the boot process from the CD?

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
it goes boot CD

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
Are you sure it doesn't make any attempt, or give you any option whatsoever to boot Knoppix?
Did you try pressing enter or something when that comes up (normally I would expect a "press any key to boot cd" type message is all)
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
Does the board have on-board graphics? Last time I had this particular problem was when I forgot to disable on-board graphics in the BIOS. Therefore windows loads, gets confused as to what's the primary graphics display & goes for the default.
Just a thought.
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
nope no onboard, and yh thinking about it thats unusal it normaly says press any button to boot from CD, right give me me 10mins :) gonna try again...
right nope it doesnt ask to press any button to start disk, and i disabled all other boot devices and made CD 1st choice. . . . still nothing
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
Ypu shpoul;dn't see any windows logo if you are booting from the CD...
Either you didn't burn the CD correctly
or the Bios is set incorrectly.
put the CD in the drive, then power up the machine - it should boot straight off the cd - no windows logo - nothing - just a lot of text as it boots into Knoppix.
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
bios set incorectly ? ... what could be the problem in the bios ?

blank CD came up with my iso. file in there clicked write files and a box came up saying burning image on disk

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
i have just recovered from a very simlilar problem, although i have ati graphics..
mine paused on that mup thing for hours, tried boot cd's, swapping hard drives to a different copy of windows (still paused at mup.sys), unplugging power from wall, then i thought about it a bit and had a sudden memory flash, i had just installed catalyst which requires something to run on the next bootup, but i had done some defragging and such before restarting, so this might have knackered it a bit, my wierd thought was that something might be bouncing around in the ram ready for boot up and therefore stalling the computer. So i unplugged both ram sticks, swaped them round and voila worked next time, 50 restarts later, no probs...
might not work on yours, but the simplest things work sometimes.
and i know that unplugging the power would clear the ram, due to the nature of how ram works, but my computer is a little wierd and these things seem to help it along now and again, the mobo battery might power the ram who knows?.

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
When you get to the Knoppix boot screen, there are a number of options you can enter - including setting the monitor specs. You will need to look at the options and monitor specs to set those. However the fact that you are aseeing something would indicate that your graphics card is working correctly.
The aim of this exercise is to recover your data before you get down to fixing the Windows problem (which may well be a re-install). You may need to go back to the Knoppix web site to get full details of the options you need.
Cheat Codes - Knoppix Documentation Wiki
For example - at the boot prompt try entering
knoppix screen=800x600
which will give you low res (if that works try screen-1024x768) - remember we are only doing this to get your data backed up.
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
welcome back peterb, ok i have a look at the Knoppix boot screen, the details for what ? what the resoutions should be set at ?
ive got into menu and hit F3 to give me all the options
one option is as follows
Set XFREE resloution and colour depth
is that the one?
ok set it up as 800x600 still getting the same message, out of range......

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
there should be a pause during the boot process where you normally just ppress return. Enter the commands I mentioned in the previous post to set the screen resolution.

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
You could try
knoppix vsysnc=60 hsysnc=60
What graphics card is it?
Other option is to boot to command line, but you need some familiarity with linux CLI to find your way around - which I suspect you don't have :)
One other thing - in addition to the screen settings - add
xserver=XFree86
to the command line (different X server)
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
lol u got that right
so on the command line add
"knoppix vsysnc=60 hsysnc=60 xserver=XFree86"
or just
"knoppix vsysnc=60 hsysnc=60"
and if that dont work
"xserver=XFree86"

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
OK - if you have booted into the linux graphical screen - you should see icons for the hard drive (if it is multi-partitioned, one for each partition)
You options now are:
Get a USB drive - plug that in to the computer and copy the data files off the hard drive onto the USB drive
See what AV is available on the knoppix disk and run that against the hard drive
If there isn'tt a virus scanner on the CD, then vcopy the data files off the hard drive, then you can download a virus checker (F-prot is pretty good for Linux) and run that against the hard drive - but really the point of this is to rescue your data. Once that is safe you can consider your other options in slower time.#
Obviouysly, if the important stuff is less than a couple of GB, you could put it on a USB memory stick. If the computer has a CD writer on it, you could burn the stuff to the CD ROM - but a USB memory stick or USB hard drive is probably the quickest and safest option.
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
kk step one rescue important files, can virus get into memory sticks ? just in case i do have 1 ??
Forest
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
If the files you are copying are infected, then yes they can - but those are most likely to be word macro viruses, so if you have macros turned off when you open the documents, then they won't do any harm, and they are fairly rare these days.
Unless you are copying .exe or .dll files, the risk is pretty small - and you can virus check the USB stick on a windows machine anyway.
My guess would be that your data files are word/excel/pp files, together with jpg and mp3 files - which are safe, as are .txt files.
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
ok ive done that now for the AV
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
Grteat - most important bit really - saving the data! (Turned into a bit of a saga!! ;) )
-

Forest
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
Yes - you have a working operating system that is independent of the hard drive, however you do need some working storage, so you could use another usb stick and download an AV program - such as F-prot. Run the update for it and then use that to scan/clean your windows hard drive - however there is a bit of Linux learning to do for that as some of the operations are command line driven.
However I think that you would probably be better installing a Windows OS on your small hard drive. make two partitions on it - one for the OS, and one for the data - then you have your data in three places - the original drive (which we know is suspect, the USB drive and a working copy on the windows drive.
You can then decide what to do with the original hard drive. You could mount it as a slave drive (is it IDE) and virus scan it, but if all the useful data has been extracted from it, I'd be inclined to just wipe it completely and reuse it for whatever. Once it is wiped, you could use your knoppix disk to clone the smaller drive to the big one again. You can also use the knoppix disk to wipe the large hard drive - but don't do that until you have a working OS system on the other drive - and your data is copied onto it.
Glad it worked out - and who knows - you may decide to investigate Linux in greater depth whne you have time!
-
Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
ive been using it for a while now and ive really fell for it, i think windows is alot simpler (maybe beacuse ive used it all my life) but i really like the interface, right ive got a fine running windows on SAY B hardrive, and problem hard drive say A. is there any software on linux to copy A to B ? or is it best to make a folder in B and copy all of A into it. ive got both attached to this computer. im about to Virus check it now. so when all A is in B i wipe A and then transfer B to A lol isnt this fun. . . . . :)

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
If you are in a graphical environment, you can drag and drop the files you want to save from one to the other.
presumably one drive is the dodgy one - what has the other one got on it? If you have an operating system on it (Windows) you are reaklly better off copying the files off the dodgy disk onto a USB stick, then copying the files off the USB stick using the windows system. It is possible to use Linux to write to an NTFS system, but if you are not familiar with linux and the file system then it is possible to make a mistake and lose the data.
Your hard disk is probably mounted as /dev/hda1 - if there are other partitions they will be shown as /dev/hda2 and so on/ The USB stick will probably be shown as /dev/sda1. if you open a window (double click) on the hda drive, you will see the files. Just drag and drop them onto the USB stick icon - or you can click on the usb stick icon and drag and drop into the window that will open up.

If you get an external drive for fioe transfer, format it on a windows machine before you connect it to the machine running linux. And format it for FAT 32. (It is possible to format a disk to FAT on a Linux machine, but its back to the command line again to do it - and while Linux will write to NT file systems, from the point of view of filke storage and transfer, FAT is a lot simpler)

Yes - lots! Choice of Guis etc, very stable, good at multi-tasking.
However whikle the Gui is fine for general use as a user (you can do 90% of most tasks in the Gui - even system admin) some rare tasks are done in the command line - and the command line gives far more flexibility and speed.
As a computer owner you have two roles - one is as a user - web browsing, word processing - using applications. the other is as an administrator - housekeeping, installing applications, configuration etc. This is true whatever operating system you are using.
However Windows (on a home system) tends to blur the distinctions - which is why many users just use administrator accounts for every day useage - VERY bad security! I would bet that you run with admin privileges - which means that if it was a virus that infected your computer, it too execduted with admin privileges, which gives it potential control over everything.
Linux tends to enforce the distinction between the two - I have one admin account - which I use only for admin tasks, and a low privilege user account - which I use on a daily basis. However I can open a terminal window in my user account - switch to root, and execute a command line for admin purposes and then close the window without logging off - it is just very flexible - but does take time and effort to master (and I am NOT a linux master or guru)
Strictly speaking, Linux refers to the kernel of the operating system - which is suppoted by lots of little programs (like format, or directory listing) that do one thing - but very well. These programs, together with teh kernel, form a distribution. Some of those utility programs have graphical front ends, others don't, so you run them in a termibal window at the command line. It isn't difficult, just a different way of working.
To format a floppy on my system, the command line would be
mkdosfs -F 16 /dev/fd0
which translated is
mkdosfs means makedosfilesystem
-F 16 means make it fat 16
/dev/fd0 means device floppydisk 0
but there are lots of options - fat 12, fat 32, native Linux filesystem (ext2, ext3), Atari file systems - and many many more.
However - this is not the place for a linux tutorial (not that I am qualified to give one) but if you do decide to explore a linux distro - invest in a good book to guide you through the first stages - it may cost £20 or so - but well worth it.

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
Didn't you get anything off using the live CD? One option (maybe a bit late now) would be to create a second partition on the disk and move all the stuff ypu want to save there, there install windows on the old partition. Depends how easy to recreate the music collection etc.

Just a pointer - I'd be very careful about advocating piracy around here.

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
I assume that you have an OEM copy? If so the reason is that the license lives and dies with the machine you install it on, and not too many people upgrade their PC into another case over it's lifetime.

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
im about to buy a new case lol, yh OEM. im gonna keep hold of it until my new case comes, all my music has been lost, couldnt be fussed to rescue it, a fresh start. right i need some AV, and recomndations ?

Re: computer screen goes black after windows logo
I personally use Kasperky Internet Security 7, and can't recommend it highly enough. You can get an OEM 3 machine license pack for about 15 quid from Scan, which is ideal for me.
