    Laptop keyboard help

    Hi

A friend of mine has a Fujitsu Amilo 17" (don`t know the exact model at the moment - it has an Nvidia 6800 G/cards, single core centrino etc.).

Recently it has developed an annoying problem: When typing on it, some keys will enter several characters, particularly the spacebar. I haven`t seen the laptop - they are currently in France - but thought it most likely that some of the keys were sticking.

They are currently using a USB keyboard - but obviously this rather negates the point of a laptop.

Any help/thoughts would be greatfully received.

    Re: Laptop keyboard help

Have they spilt something like coke or wine onto it to make it stick ? or is it just normal use. If it's normal use could try the warranty if theres any left?

I really don't know that specific laptop but I've had exactly the same problem with both normal keyboards and laptop ones before.

I dealt with them by removing from the enclosure, making sure that there were no printed circuit boards attached (taping any electronics into a small plastic bag if they can't be removed), then washing them with a toothbrush in a bowl of warm water. Stick them in an airing cupboard to dry for a day or so and then refit.

Obviously not all can be washed this way so it would be down to your discretion as to whether you thought it safe, also make sure it's properly dry before refit as can cause all sorts of weird things if it's still wet (several glasses of red wine/whiskey/beer later and I got quite quick at cleaning my old Microsoft natural elite). And don't come back moaning if it doesn't work

You could alternatively try and pick up a replacement keyboard on ebay if you can get the exact model etc their normally pretty easy to remove and replace, involving removing a small amount of the plastic casing and then a few screws and off they pop revealing the internals of the laptop

Hi, thanks for the reply. I doubt anything has been spilt on it, he`s a professional photographer, so is pretty careful with all his stuff - but I think it must be 2 1/2 years old now. Time, dust & wear may have taken its toll. I think a replacement keyboard may be the best option.
