i recently got a new computer my old one has loads of my music on there, but the old one broke, so ive taken the hardrive out and want to transfere the music... PC world says 99 quid for a measly transfere to a disk

is there a cheeper way like sticking it in the computer ive got at the minute.. but then how would i get it onto the orignal one on the new harddrive.

    cheers..tom

Re: £99 pcworld rip off...cant be right

Well, just open your pc case and plug it in... then windows should see it (assuming the drive is not dead)...

If the drive is sata then you need a spare sata port/cable
If the drive is ide then you need a spare channel (usually 2 channels on 1 port/cable)

Alternatively you could buy an external enclosure (make sure you get a compatible one), stick the drive in and then plug into usb to see all files

£99!!! those guys really exploit the PC ignorant people!

Re: £99 pcworld rip off...cant be right

Im pretty sure its SATA, and once its in you can only boot from one of the hardrives cant you, so i assume id have to boot from the old one, stuck all the music on my USB and then load it back on to my new one?

i know PCworld are pathetic 27 quid to install RAM... lol

Re: £99 pcworld rip off...cant be right

Depends on the type of drives and the support in the new computer.

If the new computer uses SATA drives but has an IDE connection on the motherboard, and the old drive is IDE, you can connect the drive to the ide port and copy the files across.

However a simpler way is to buy an external IDE to USB caddy and mount the old drive in that. Then just plug it into a USB port - and copy the required files across.

If the old drive is SATA, then you can get a SATA to USB caddy.

This one is cheap and cheerful - but it will do the job.

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

If you want to pay more for something more stylish, you can - but it won't do the job any better.

Thats probably not far off being about right. Hourly rates are usually charged at between £40 and £55 an hour.

You pay this at a garage, why not at a computer super store?

And yes, i'm use someone is going to trot out something about PCWorld techs not knowing what the are doing, but how do you know the guys that lookat your car aren't exactly the same?

Re: £99 pcworld rip off...cant be right

Would the way i put work, becuase if it does, il just do it now instead of having to wait till i go to Dixon's or something to buy one.

and then if its not SATA, il will just have to buy one heh. i know my fair share about computers but that old IDE connection thingy is beyond me.

Re: £99 pcworld rip off...cant be right

    SATA looks like this:

IDE uses the flat ribbon cables and has a much wider plug...

You should be able to tell by just looking at the drive (or the cable connected to it!)

If your new pc can take an extra sata or ide device then it will work... just turn the new pc off, plug in power and data cable and turn on on pc... it should pick it up automatically... it will still boot of the other drive if you leave it connected...

Sorry if this sounds a bit condescending... IT hardware fitting jobs do not require much skill... no where near the same amount of skill as a mechanic... these guys have no formal qualifications, most of us could do their jobs better when we were 15 (well I probably could have!)...

Re: £99 pcworld rip off...cant be right

I am not sure I fully understand your posts...

Leave the new hard drive connected otherwise you won't be able to load windows...

Disconnect the DVD drive, there should be 2 cables connected to it, one for data, one for power... connect these both to the old hard drive, then turn your pc on, and hopefully you will be able to copy your data over... then turn pc off and reconnect the DVD drive...

As I said in an earlier post - get an external caddy, mount the disk in that and copy the files via USB - saves opening up your computer.

    Definitely the easiest solution.

I can Highly recommend the Akasa IDE/SATA to USB case. They are very good and will accept either SATA hard drives or IDE.

AKASA P2 Series 3.5" e-SATA/USB-Quad Int. Combo Ext. Black Aluminum SATA/IDE Encl.

    Also available at PCWorld

Plug the old drive into new computer. Load windows (on normal hdd) hopefully drive should be recognised if not in Windows 2000 or XP, right-click on My Computer and go to “Manage”. In the window that comes up, click Disk Management in the left pane. Once it loads, you should see an “Initialize Disk” wizard pop up.

Copy/cut and paste over the music to new drive.. Take out old drive, or just keep it in there and run music from that, saves time more space =]
