That is the same mentality as "There wasn't a label on the microwave saying it wasn't suitable for drying my dog".

Fact is you are being dishonest in trying to RMA a board you damaged.

You know it, Hexus readers know it, and if representatives from the e tailer you bought it from (ebuyer or whoever) have read the thread, they know it too.

but why would you put a hole on a board, right above a screw hole, that can't be used? or it knackers the board..
it makes absolutely no sense at all!

Matty - we do not accept that kind of attack on anyone on HEXUS. Let me make it 100% clear that if you give anyone else a reply like that again, unprovoked, you will be having a weeks holiday.
Lucio said nothing wrong. You're trying to cheat the system, you damaged it no one else.

Now, was this your MSI board or the nVidia one, what what model was it exactly?

It makes perfect sense. They use one board layout and put the components on as needed.
By having to make a different PCB layout for every model, it would cost a fortune.

If the hole didn't have any silver around it, a screw does not go there. If its directly in the corner, with no silver and you need to support it, you are supposed to use a plastic support.

    They look like this

it was the nVidia 1, ermm.. it was the XFX 680i SLi, i think.. i'd check on the box but it's already gone.
bought it from eBuyer but they've stopped selling it by the looks of things, probably too many complaints about it being an awful overclocker and not actually being capable of a 1333MHz FSB.

those things there are used to hold heatsinks onto stuff.. and it wouldn't reach the gap that i'd use it for anyway. unless you can get standoffs that those fit into..

    Re: PC won't boot

Agent, if I dont get any of the plastic stand offs with the board, where can I get some, might be needing some with new case.

matty, those plastic things arent used to hold heatsinks onto stuff, they are made to support the motherboard if its not supported by one of the brass stand offs.

They should come with your case if you need them. You get slightly different types depending on the case but they all do the same job.
In all honesty, I never use one, as there is at most only one hole in most boards that can't be screwed down.

Maplin used to sell them though IIRC.

edit - Amazon.co.uk: StarTech.com Plastic Screw-In Standoffs for pre-tapped PC case (Pkg. of 50): Electronics & Photo for the screw in types mate
edit2 - 30 -Nylon Motherboard Standoffs Plastic Standoff AT/ATX on eBay, also Cases Towers, For Desktops, PC Components, Computers Networking (end time 04-Apr-08 03:40:09 BST) for the flat / tabbed type. Can't find any in the UK though

those white clips on the blue background.. i've seen them before holding the NB and SB on and on my old 8400GS holding the heatsink on, although the ones on the graphics card were slightly different with a sort of push mechanism

i see the pic now.. but that hole has a silver bit round it, on my board those tiny little resistors are right next to the hole.. so when i put a metal screw in it it obviously shorted them out and blackened the solder.

You are mistaken. They are different and much smaller.

Yes, I know that one has silver around it.....common mate, a bit of common sense here
Its a picture to illustrate what you should have done. Just ignore the silver for one second and apply it to your situation.

    Re: PC won't boot

If the board matty is refering to was the one in his my system spec yesterday then this is a google image of it

i see the hole he is talking about (if its this board), and even so, imo a normal screw would fit that.

    Thanks for the links agent.

    Its just incase really..

oh right :S they look similar, but i've never actually had 1 out of its place so i don't know it's shape that well..

so i should've used a plastic sort of screw instead of a metal 1?
i didn't have any supplied with my case or motherboard so i wouldn't know to use them. didn't even know they existed until today, but i'll definately be more careful with my next board, whether that turns out to be a replaced board or 1 i buy from somewhere else..

that's definately not my board, that has tri-SLi and it's black.. mine has normal SLi and for some reason my board is red.. (that's been commented on before, dunno why it's red)

mine's very similar.. things placed in the same places, but it has the top and bottom PCI-E slots.. and it's red, and the hole in the top-right isn't protected by silver.

edit: mine also has a different NB and SB heatsink on them..
