no signal

hi all

over the weekend one of my computers booted but the signal to the monitor wasnt there. the monitor status is working, but it seems there is no communication between computer and monitor. pressing any keys didnt change it, i checked the cable for bent pins - the vga cable wasnt under pressure or twisted. i changed where the signal goes in the monitor, ie into 2nd imput but that doesnt work. graphics card is in securely....the thing is i've done nothing to it, not moved, opened, nothing!

graphics 9600xt 256mb, vga out, dvi, s-cable

i'm going to borrow another cable tonight and see if it's that.
also reinstall the graphics card.

i suspect it's one of those 2....but its a random guess.

any help would be appreciated.

Are you getting any display on the monitor? From your post it sounds as if you are seeing it boot up, in which case check the keyboard.

If I have not interpreted your post correctly - what are you seeing?

my mistake, i see nothing but the monitor status screen saying no signal, no computer boot up at all.

the computer sounds like it's booting up properly, but i can't see it!

Lets not be captain obvious here but from past experience this situation usually boils down to 4 problems;

1) Motherboard failure; the graphics slot has bite the dust, usually a post beep / number wahtever you call it, will tell you.
2) Power failure; the PSU isn't feeding enough power to the board.
3) Monitor failure; your monitor has met its end. <- Main culprit !
4) Graphics card failure; your graphics card has killed itself in your long run of fragging.

I would recommend these steps for now:
1) Try plugging in to another Monitor (and another set of monitor cables)

(there was around 7 other steps but I thought it'll only serve to confuse you - so I took them out )

It could still be your VGA cable so trying a spare (if you have one) would be the first, easiest thing to do and would be the cheapest of all possible problems to fix.

Do you have a TV with DVI input? Could you try outputting to that instead of your CRT?

i've tried a spare cable but that didnt work, i do have a s-video out and need to find the cables to connect it to a tv.

then try it with someones flatscreen.

Q. if i connect the screen to a laptop and the laptop recognises there is a second monitor and i set it to duplicate the laptop screen, should that be as straightforward as i think for it to show on the desktop monitor? if so my monitor is buggered.

Ensure the second screen is 'enabled' in the laptop software, as there is sometimes a setting to 'disable' the second screen, depends on the laptop and the graphic card, but generally speaking, yes, it's that straight forward I'm afraid....

another i forgot to mention is that the keyboard lights don't come on. i've put the usb cable in different slots and also tried a no usb plug keyboard. that got me thinking that the power supply was gone....but then again the fans were running....

I struck the back of the monitor a few times with my flat hand
eureka it worked

It is not a permenent cure I have had to give it a slap on several occasions
each time it has worked

Your PSU puts out power over different voltages on different lines, so the lines that are powering fans could be fine, but the lines to the board may be dead? Does your m'board have a 20/24 pin power connection and a 4/8 pin connector? If the board starts up but the graphics doesn't then the 4/8 pin line is the probable culprit if its PSU.

Of course it could also still be the GPU or M'board itself
