Ways of having internet in your room????

I have a BT Homehub downstairs. My computer is upstairs in my room. The only way I know of getting internet in my room is by using wireless. Is there any other way I can have internet in my room without using wireless? I have a phone line in my room, so, maybe using another router in my room could be an option, but I m not sure if thats possible.

You don't want or can't get wireless?

If the power is on the same ring just go for some homeplugs.

You can't have 2 routers on the same phone line.

What is it being used for downstairs? If it is just for wireless access then move it upstairs - job done. Failing that the only other option is wires, or maybe a homeplug may do you?

As above: your 4 options are homeplug, long wire, wireless or get a phone point closer by.

Wireless isn't so bad a signal - mine runs with a nice cheap Edimax wireless with no issues.

Homeplug is a popular option - and not expensive.

Wired is cheap... although perhaps not always so tidy

A new phone socket ... a few pounds for an extension cable or wiring kit... or a lot more to get BT to wire one up for you.

http://www.cableuniverse.co.uk/ do low profile cat5e from 0.5 to 30m, wired up my PC & 2nd PS3 using that, just slid it under the skirting between the carpet, much much easier to use than normal rounded cable & of course beats wireless performance

I want it wired so that its that bit more faster! There's another computer downstairs that has the hub connected to it. Is a home plug useful, and will it give a faster internet connection than wireless? If it does, what do I look out for in terms of quality??

Re: Ways of having internet in your room????

Yeah, I've used low profile for same purpose as Rob B. Really easy to keep it out of the way, although it tends to look a bit like Tangela if you leave a lot of slack. Mind you, what cables don't

If you want to do online gaming, I'd seriously consider running an ethernet cable of some kind.

If you're just browsing the web, chatting, anything not particularly dependent on ping times - then look into wireless or homeplugs. Homeplugs may not work, depends on how your house is wired up. Wireless should work, but often inexplicably has issues.

    EDIT:

As for your last post - what do you mean by speed? Internet is 24Mb/s at maximum, and even wireless G is 54Mb/s so you won't be able to download faster with a wire - well, nothing worth mentioning anyway. And wireless N is even faster than standard ethernet, assuming you don't have massive packet loss. If you're talking about pings, then that's a different story altogether.

Re: Ways of having internet in your room????

G very rarely, if ever reaches 54Mb/s - if the OP has a decent Internet connection such as ADSL2+ or VM 50 meg then an upgrade may be useful. I did some quick tests with iperf over G just out of interest and through walls I was getting something like 10Mb/s IIRC, even though link speed was 54Mb/s according to Windows. Also N is rarely faster than Fast Ethernet for the same reason. IMO wireless is good for mobility (laptops that get moved a lot for example) or as a last resort where cable simply can't be installed for whatever reason but if it's possible to install it wired is better every time.

I guess it's internet speed determined - I'm on wireless G and my actual LAN speed is still far far higher than my broadband maximum on ADSL2+. Ping through wireless seems okay too:

Though changing from a crappy USB stick to a PCI wireless card helped considerably. Still on the O2 box (same as BT home hub I think)

Very variable, and entirely location dependent though.

Typically, with radio propagation, the higher the frequency the more susceptible it is to interference from all sorts of things. Walls and floors will degrade signals, and anything metal can kill point to point outright. So .... don't site a router if there's a large fridge-freezer (or similar) between it and where you want to use the laptop/PC.

And if you do have problems, sometimes moving the router even a foot or two can make a huge difference, better or worse.

And of course, a poor signal may well still establish a connection, might it might well affect reliability, and often data rates too.

Try doing a site survey in something like a supermarket trying to ensure reliable radio data and you'll soon find out how much of a pain these problems can be.

My point .... you;re right, it's quite possible to get a good connection with a cheap router, and an expensive router is no guarantee of better performance, though the "n" standard often gives an edge. But what works for you may well not work for me, or vice versa. It'a hard to make generalisations because it's so dependent on local factors.

Essentially, it's suck-it-and-see, but just because one router doesn't give a good data rate doesn't mean another won't, or that going "n" won't make all the difference, or even that playing around with router locations won't solve a problem without buying any new gear at all.

A classic example. I had one case where a mobile radio connection worked perfectly in one spot, but move the transceiver 5 or 6 feet in either direction and you got nothing at all - no voice, no data connection. And that was with a 400w transmitter, not the piddly output from wifi. It gives an illustration of just how important location of the router can be,and I've no doubt that that particular problem was down to some local obstruction, though I never found out what it was.

Also, don't forget that wireless is not switched, so even N is only the equivilant of a fast hub, NOT a switch.

You having wired or wireless is not going to make the internet faster! I use an 11g USB connector on my main rig (I don't game online, btw) and often get downloads running at 750KB/s. But then at other times I use the wired connection on my HTPC and get downloads running at 100KB/s. It depends on when your ISP decides to let you have the bandwidth

So, if it's mainly for surfing or downloading, you'll be absolutely fine with wireless.

What's the other PC used for? If that's just used for surfing and email, then why not move the home hub to your room and put the other PC on wireless?
