    Failing to burn DVDs

About 75% of the DVDs I burn fail file verification.

I've tried Nero and CDburnerXP and used both the built in file verification and also CRC32finder.

Where do I start looking at reasons why the files fail to burn properly?

Absolutely stock machine (in the my system spec) using an Atapi DVD A DH20A1S burner and 16x write speed media.

I set the burn speed from 4x to 16x and it makes no difference.

    Re: Failing to burn DVDs

Its either the burner(maybe the cable too) or the media, there is very little else it could be.

Try reinstalling Nero? I heard some version of Nero will burn bad discs intentionally if the serial number is bad.
Also, could try running memtest and make sure your ram is alright.

What brand of discs are you using? Try running the surface scan / disk quality check in Nero CD-DVD Speed and see what the graphs say?

    Re: Failing to burn DVDs

Does your burner have the latest firmware installed? In most cases the latest firmware will increase the compatibility with various media, although on the rare occassion it makes things worse. Have you tried different brands of media? Some burners simply don't work well with certain brands of media.

    Re: Failing to burn DVDs

    Burner or media. *sigh*

I'll try installing the latest firmware on the burner.

I do have an old Lite-On burner (with a dodgy open/close tray button) that I might be able to test the media on (that is if the tray will open, lol).

Media is cheap so I'll buy another 100 pack from somewhere at some point.

The media might be fine but you need to see if it's compatible with the problem burner. Stick to testing the problem one . Start with the firmware first though. After some updates I get increased write speeds on the same media.

    Re: Failing to burn DVDs

That drive is oem, no official fm support iirc, but it can be crossflashed to LH-20A1S, check out the thread on cd-freaks. Don't verify with nero, pointless, your drive is a good scanning drive, so scan with nero cd-dvd for pi/pif. What happens after a burn, can the disc not be read, files wont copy over?

    Re: Failing to burn DVDs

My bet is the discs, I had a problem with a certain brand I have a Pioneer and DVDRW I used RITEK which have been excellent I used a different brand for CDR and I think out of about 15 discs 2 worked and when I played them back they even had crackling etc.. I chucked them in the end and bought RITEK CDR and no problems since.

The files fail CRC32 check so I just bin the discs and try again.

I don't quite understand you advice (regarding pi/pif)...My drive came with Nero Essentials so I started using that, but due to the burning issues, I tried out CDburnerXP. Same story.

I remember I got the pack of 100 discs from Scan back in October/November but I logged in and my history just shows 1 invoice entry (strange).

Nero verification is far from pointless.

A verification by nero checks that the data is valid.
A pie/pif scan checks the quality of the write and its associated parity.

You can have errors in pir/pif and have the data validate fine

Home PI/PIF scanning - Who to believe? on CD Freaks.com - Reviews- Conclusion for much more information.

Granted, it would be handy to do in this situation though
Sleepy - you want me to drop a few Riteks in the post I have about for you to test with?
Do CD's fail to write or just DVD's?

Could you link me to this statement, a pro nero verification via a notable site, eg cd-freaks or similar where the actually deal with scans.

First of all, I would salvage one of the burned discs, pop it in the lite-on dh, using nero cd-dvd
    Nero CD-DVD Speed website

Run a TRT scan, nero cd-dvd/run test/transfer rate, you are looking for a nice arch graph

What is there that's needed to backup about it exactly?

A verification in Nero simply checks that the data is valid, by doing a bit by bit comparison of the file on the harddrive and the one written to the optical disk.
Its done in all CD programs from CDburnerXP to Imgburn.

Verification does not deal with write quality (which is what pie/pif is for). The only thing verification does is say that the data, at that time is valid (or not) when written on the disk. I can't see what there is to externally link about that, its just so basic?

I never said it dealt with write/burn quality, I said is was a pointless scan, I would like to read why it is Far from pointless, simple

Indeed you didn't, but claimed it is "pointless" to use Nero to check the data, then suggest a pie/pif scan......which is not designed to show discrepancy's in data

Don't verify with nero, pointless, your drive is a good scanning drive, so scan with nero cd-dvd for pi/pif
Its far from pointless because without it he would not have been able to verify that the image was not wrote properly. Simple really

If you have wrote a disk using nero, what would you use to ensure the data was intact if Nero's is "pointless"?
