    "unidentified network" issue

    afternoon.

so i wake up this morning, turn on my computer, and find that i cannot connect to the internet.
my girlfriend (wireless) and my flatmate (ethernet) can but i cant. I am only on ethernet.

    running vista 64.

when connecting to the router I get Unidentied Network, ipv4 Local/Limited, ipv6 Local/Limited. Access: Local Only.
I cant assign a new name nor can I make the network private.

More importantly I cannot log in to the router settings... 192.168.1.1 pings out.

I see lots of forum posting before but there seems to be no solution, was there a vista update that has just destroyed my ability to connect to the router???

Router is Linksys WAG354 v2 - no update found (running v.58)
Updated nvidia nforce networking controller drivers
two ethernet ports on my 780i striker ii mobo.

ive rolled back a week ago (things were fine then) ... no change!

if anyone can help that would be great ... spoilt my weekend!!!

it keeps trying to IDENTIFY a network, try to diagnose, my farts find out what the problems are better than vista!

    Re: "unidentified network" issue

SOLUTION: Go to Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers and make only the registry modification described under "MORE INFORMATION". (Note: steps 1 through 7.)

    Re: "unidentified network" issue

    thanks burtie.

that was on my next thing to do list but i have resovled the issue now.

just in case further people search for this problem and cannot find the answer it is this:-

nvidia nforve network controller does not work after sleep/hibernation (At least in vista 64).

the only way to solve this is to go to the device manager -> network adaptors -> right click on each "properties" and uncheck the box that allows windows to control the power state.

then in the most unkind fashion hold the power switch of the comp until power down (drains the power and for some reason i guess the state of the comp), a simple shut down wont work.

then switch off everything at the plug incl router etc for about 10 mins (well thats what i did!) ... turn power on, allow time for the router to boot and activity lights are on, then boot up comp and voila it works fine!!!!

5 hours later i solved it! woohoo!

    Re: "unidentified network" issue

I've been experiencing the same problems on my vista machine (also nvidia nforce network controler), but only after I put it into sleep mode once. Before everything worked fine. I did the whole power off thing and suddenly it works again!

    Thank you Spoil3r!
