How much FPS realistically can I expect to loose if I move to Vista X64 Sp1 Ultimate I know my 3dmark dropped by about 600 points when I moved earlier.

Re: Are you using Vista now?

    Not currently using it.
I was an early adopter that got stung by the constant issues of the OS and driver support for it, so even though people don't tend to have as many issues now I'm still not overly keen to change what's working for me (XP!)

Having said that, I've been using Linux more and more lately. Ubuntu is the only OS on my laptop, because quite frankly, it can do everything I need to on it. For my laptop, there is nothing Windows does that Ubuntu doesnt for me.
It gives me an excuse to learn another OS at the same time

    Not a bad idea that.
Is Linux easy to sort out wireless connections? Thats the main reason i plumped Vista on the lappy....the network set up is made very easy.

Re: Are you using Vista now?

Ubuntu was considerably easier than any version of any version of Windows (including Vista) I've used to install and configure, provided you have a net connection.

Wireless worked out of the box for me. I even changed network cards (the internal laptop one) to test out which had the better signal strength and that worked fine too.

There was one driver that couldn't be included as default. But it flagged this up and said something along the lines of "tick this box to install it". Very easy.

Having said that, I'll just repeat what Jo has said on many occasions: If you're looking for a Windows based system, go with Windows. Linux is very different in a fair few ways (the file system pisses me off no end for example). Its taken me a while to get my head around some stuff, and there are still plenty of questions I have.

Lets put it this way - my parents have never used a computer in their life until a few weeks ago when they borrowed my laptop. My dad is now getting to grips with using the web without an issue using Firefox. As I will be the admin and installing / configuring stuff, he really doesn't have to worry about that. As far as he's concerned, its very easy to 'just use'.

Will I be sticking with it? - Most likely. Can't say I've had any issues, although I want to be testing it on the desktop soon, its just the games issue I'm worried about.
Oh, and Compiz Fusion (YouTube - Compiz Fusion: A Quick Demonstration) Makes Aero look old and dated. It's stunned me. So smooth to use, and some _really_ useful features. The number of times I've been asked "How do I get my Vista to look like that" is a lot

Re: Are you using Vista now?

I plan to move to X64 later this evening since XP is riddled with problems for me, and I tend to have a happier time on Vista.

If push comes to shove I'll OC more and save for a new GPU if I wish to enjoy DX10 gaming.

    The system layout sorry.
I consider myself fairly technically competent, but it scares the hell out of me still.

You might find this link useful

Not really the right thread to discuss in greater detail! But there have been many occasions when I have been grateful for the locate command!

Re: Are you using Vista now?

I'm using Vista mostly because I got a new computer, if I hadn't built a new system I'd never have bothered upgrading.

On the plus side, it's come in handy at work

Re: Are you using Vista now?

Fine on my desktop, hate it on my laptop. Once I'm done with Uni i'll be putting XP on it because I can't stand vista. This is a new xps M1330 (2.2GHz C2D, 2gb or ram and 7200rpm drive etc..) still manages to be horrible though.

Re: Are you using Vista now?

it's fine, i can hardly tell the difference between between it and xp other than a couple of gimmiks (sidebar, theme, aero etc.) and that annoying uac thing.
If you're still on xp i wouldn't upgrade as there's hardly any difference imo, but that doesn't mean that it's a bad os, just that it's too similar to xp to warrant spending more money on
