Computer cuts out and refuses to restart

    Hi all

For some reason my computer will just randomly cut out, although both the keyboard and mouse will still be turned on (this shows that the pc is still supplying power to them)

Once the computer cuts out, if you try and turn it back on , it starts to boot up for a few seconds before turning itself off again.

If you leave the computer alone for about a minute then turn it back on, it switches on and boots up perfectly.

Somtimes it will randomly turn itself off upto 5 times in a single day.

I really dont know whats wrong, please help.

    Kindest Regards
    Crossfire655

It sounds like an overheating issue, there will be a setting in the BIOS that will shut the computer down if a key computer reaches a temperature higher than a given threshold.

try using something like this - CPUID to monitor your temperatures to see if they look too high.

It it is likely to be either overheating CPU or the power supply (I had that problem - took ages to find out it was the PSU shutting down on overheat), or a PSU fault in general, or a memory problem.

If it has only started happeniung during the recent spell of warm weather - I'd say overheating, particularly as it starts up again after a few minutes - when the temp sensors and components have cooled down a bit.

Try running it with a side cover off to get a bit more cooling.

Could well be overheating issues. Have you tried running any thermal monitoring software (such as Coretemp for Core CPUs)?

Thanks very much for the help.

here is the reading from the cupid.

    Temperatures

    sensor value min max
    TMPIN0 -54C -54C -54C
    TMPIN0 -54C -54C -54C

    HDD 35C 35C 35C

i have never used a heat monitor software before.

Hmm - doesn't look as if the monitoring software is working properely - or you just posted the figures after starting it (so all the temperatures are the same!)

However 54 degrees shouldn't be causing a shutdown, unless it is the PSU that is overheating. Harder to monitor that unless the PSU gives a temperature output.

On a pragmatic level, the weather is set to cool down over the weekend, so if the problem goes away, that is the cause - the next stage will be identifying exactly what is overheating - and fixing it.

If it's a heat problem you could always open up the case and look to see if you have a lot of dust built up in your heatsinks.
