    Dvi ?

    Hi,
I have a 17" Philips TFT monitor. The cable running out the back is fixed to the monitor. It ca not be removed.

I tried connecting an adapter to the end. DVI - HDMI. I was shocked to find it wouldn't fit in the DVI slot.
On my monitors DVI it seems it has extra pins. the line bit has 2 pins either side.
They prevent it slotting into the adapter where the line bit had no hole for the pins to slot into it.

    What exactly is wrong here?

See which one of those pictures it is.

It may be a DVI socket, but it could just be using analogue in - hence the extra pins to stop you attaching a digital adaptor - It just wouldn't work.

    Re: Dvi ?

Those aditional pins are for the Analogue portion of the DVI spec. As HDMI doesn't have this provision, those four pins are unused. Obviously the adapter isn't designed to cope with the analogue pins.

You would like to think the adapter would at least be designed to accomodate them, even if they aren't connected to anything, thus letting you use the digital portion of the original connector. But obviously in this case it hasn't.

Whoa, guess I was just googling the wrong thing.

    Learn something new every day.

My monitor has a DVI-I connection. The adapter I was trying use was a DVI-D connector.
I was trying to get my monitor working on XBox 360. So DVI-I cannot be converted into into HDMI.
Guess I'll have to see if if it's possible to to convert to VGA then try hooking it up to the XBox 360 VGA cable instead.

    Many thanks.

    Re: Dvi ?

Having trouble finding info on this.

I can get hold of a DVI-A to VGA adapter.

Is it possible to slot a male DVI-I into a female DVI-A socket?
