looking for a good web host

i have been through more web hosts than i can shake a stick at, all of them piss me off with unreliable services and the famous "we cant find anyting wrong"

streamline.net and dataflame are terrible with constant brownouts of 404's database crapping out etc.

im sick and tired of excuses from them and fake promises it wont or cant happen again.

anyone hosting a busy site without issues, can you post a link to your hosting company for me to check out please, i cant afford dedicated, although hosting it on my game server is a last ditch measure..

all i need is some space and a sql database to take vbulletin and a few of its plugins, but its got to be reliable and not run by a bunch of window lickers.

Re: looking for a good web host

I am using streamline's trial offer thing and am also rather annoyed with them but I don't think anyone else is that much better... every place has there fair share of problems.

I guess after building my site twice I don't want to go through it all again even if this time I'll complete it in a few hours because all the files are already edited.

If someone does know of a seriously good webhost I can't say I wont jump ship as I haven't paid for what I've got

m8 change your card details on there site and inform them well in advance your not staying, they took payment a week early from me due to "processing"

i nearly took a drive to the HQ as its only about 30 miles away, but i would have lost my rag and ended up getting arrested if there as bad as they are online !

Re: looking for a good web host

not had a problem with GoDaddy touch wood. Moved to them after being tossed pillar to post with smalltime hosts.

Decided to pay a bit more and look at getting a bit more quality. With the dollar/pound being as it is GoDaddy was a wise option. I got 3 years hosting for £46.

    10gb/300gb transfer

I run iBeats.co.uk from em and not had a problem. I use them now for almost everything I host.

You get what you pay for essentially. And I've not been let down yet!

Re: looking for a good web host

We've been using webhosting.uk.com for our site, had a couple of issues with them where the site has gone down for 10 minutes or so but no major worries.

That said, our traffic is incredibly low (about 3GB a month)

Re: looking for a good web host

A few months ago I dipped my toe into the waters again and bought some mid-tier reseller hosting with Real Hosts for mine and my clients' sites - their site may look average but their tech support right from day one was EXCELLENT (bonus being that one of the company owners who does email support is a night owl, like I am, so he was responding to emails at half 1 in the morning!) Plus they offer either UK or US hosting, so you can take advantage of the £/$ rate and get some pretty good hosting for the price.

At work we're coloed with them (through our web designers, but we're still hosted by the same company) in a Manchester DC (MaNAP I think it is) - granted it's a dedi box, but it's working seamlessly. Fast speeds, decent latency, they're proactive rather than reactive.

I've also been hosted with NSDesign for a couple of my sites for a LONG time - back in 1997, £29 a year for web space and a domain name looked too good to pass up, and although I don't get a lot for what I pay (currently £65/yr, downsized from more than £120/yr) I can always rely on it just *working*. That's why my email is still hosted with them. If I have a problem, I can email the owner and get a response - and although he now has outsourced tech support helping him and the other staff, it's still pretty good. Almost guaranteed if you ask for a response from the boss, you'll get one by phone or email. They're based in Scotland too, so just a phone call away if you really want to speak to them.

I'm willing to pay the premium for good UK-based services - learnt that the hard way!

At work, we also have some smaller sites hosted with streamline and they're generally utter bollocks - constant FTP problems, they don't support simple, basic features like Apache directory indexes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and almost everything is crippled (can't even turn directory indexing on via .htaccess). tried to get them to manually enable it and was told they can't due to 'server issues' / 'security issues' / 'confguration issues' ... Support is incredibly cyclical too, you submit a ticket and you have to repeat yourself countless times giving the same basic info before anything is acted upon...

Don't even consider Easyspace. Awful service all round, congested, expensive - we used to be hosted with them 12 months ago (before I came on board at the company I work at atm) - when emails started EITHER taking more than half an hour to get to your inbox (still happens) or they're just silently bounced by the mailserver without you ever knowing, based on their own aggressive spam policies which they haven't made clear to anybody! The amount of businesses who must be losing customers (or their hair) over the email problems is just ridiculous... As a solution to the email problem, they suggested we get a dedicated server with them JUST TO ROUTE OUR EMAIL THROUGH - and they wouldn't regrade us to their old legacy email platform (whitelabel Everyone.net service) although we have an account with that too (but it's still incredibly slow to receive email... 45mins or more for an email which you've sent to yourself from another account is just not on in this day and age, and they try and cover their arses by saying "allow up to 2 hours for email delivery!"

Awful customer service all round, awful platforms and services. Avoid like the plague.

Mini rant over... Hope that info's useful.
