Ebay? Good spec computer for £250, worth and why so cheep.
My computer just went bust and i wanted something that plays most of the latest main cod2 and cod4 and quake 4 i was looking on ebay and you get things like this?
CORE 2 DUO E8200 / 500GB / 4 GB DDR2 / ATI HD 2400 1GB on eBay, also, Desktop PCs, Computing (end time 25-May-08 21:00:00 BST)
£277 why so cheep and is it worth from anyones experience risking it?
Re: Ebay? Good spec computer for £250, worth and why so cheep.
This is what i can gather from the spec and what i suppose the rest is:
1. Cheap case
2. VERY cheap PSU
3. Only PC5400 memory (very cheap these days).
4. Cheap graphics card
5. Almost certainly a cheapo motherboard aswell.
Some of these parts are probably second user.
They even think the CPU runs at 5ghz+. If thats the case my Quad is currently running at 12.8ghz :D
Its ok i suppose. The only things in it worth more than £50 are the CPU and HDD though.
Everything else is between £10-30.
Personally i would steer clear.
Also its £32.50 to deliver it. Thats expensive.
All in all £300. I would say not worth it :)
Re: Ebay? Good spec computer for £250, worth and why so cheep.
does look good, everything will probably be generic rubbish
dell vostros provided a great system for 300 though, it was something like 1tb HDD 2gb ram and a c2d e.t.c
have a check on hotukdeals for the deal, was quite a good one at that.
edit: exactly what blitzen says +1
Re: Ebay? Good spec computer for £250, worth and why so cheep.
i wonderd why it was so cheep thanks lads now i know to stay clear.
Re: Ebay? Good spec computer for £250, worth and why so cheep.
and also this is just one system do you think they are all like this.
Re: Ebay? Good spec computer for £250, worth and why so cheep.
Plus ive go to ebay becuase i lost a hell of a lot of money from my current computer going bust. so im just going for something cheep but can play what i played beofre.
effing PSU's eh.

Re: Ebay? Good spec computer for £250, worth and why so cheep.
I'd never buy second hand PC's if that what it is.
Anything could have been done to it. Like overclocking.
One other thing.
Being weary of big brand computers on the cheap.
Mine being a Packard Bell. The mobo, as I found, is a cut down MSI board.
So if you are planning on upgrading it later you may want to think about that.
When I tried to put an 8800GTS card in it wouldn't boot up. I soon found out that the via chipset isn't compatable.
Cheap now, you may well be paying for it later.
Re: Ebay? Good spec computer for £250, worth and why so cheep.
Blitzen has summed it up for me. If you have £300 to spare you might as well build your own, and you would easily be able to do it with higher quality components.
However if you don't have the time, then dell and mesh are not bad places to look for a cheap base unit.
Also if you intend to play COD 2, COD 4 and Quake 4, you are going to need a better gfx then an ati 2400. Something like an Nvidia 8600 series, or Ati 3650 should suffice.
Re: Ebay? Good spec computer for £250, worth and why so cheep.
how on earth can you build a £300 PC for 300?
windows XP - £60?
that leaves 240 for the WHOLE RIG!
and you wont ever be able to match a dell spec machine either even if it wont be possible to upgrade

Ah I forgot about windows XP, maybe he could use the licence from his old pc?
Actually you could just about build a half decent pc for £240/£250 (with £300 I am pretty definite), however you would have to cut down on the cpu and hd, but you would be able to pick out a better case, psu and gfx card. The OP intends to do some gaming and that dell has onboard graphics which would be useless in gaming.
But the dell is still a half decent deal, especially considering it has a good cpu and hd.

It depends on how you look at it.
If you are really only going to use your PC for office work of web browsing then I can see that a cheap Dell would be the best option there.
I've seen various articles in the past that have shown articles on building cheap PC's.
I reckon you could do it. And you could choose where to cut corners. At least then you know exactly what went into it and you would be much clearer on what you can do with it later on.
An OEM version of XP wouldn't cost much.

Noooooooooooooo :)
Whatever you decide DO NOT buy a MESH machine.
The warranties arent worth the paper they are printed on and the company is obviously in financial trouble.
If you have to get pre-built the look at Scan or somewhere like that.
I would rather have the ebay offering than use MESH.
Re: Ebay? Good spec computer for £250, worth and why so cheep.
yeah i could build an average system for 300 for a gaming rig you would have to touch 350-400 depending how good you want it and thats if you dont want a monitor included. I would stay away from Ebay for ANY pc as there are a lot of scammers sending out faulty machines was gonna start selling on there myself but with so much bad rep i'm not gonna bother.
Re: Ebay? Good spec computer for £250, worth and why so cheep.
I wouldn't be buying a system from any computer shop which (falsely) advertises "Core2Quad 9.6GHz"
Re: Ebay? Good spec computer for £250, worth and why so cheep.
Well what ever way ive looked at it
i went on scan and got 4 items in the basket and i was already up to 400-500 pounds.
i could push the budget to 350-380
but i really dont want to spend to much after what happened to my old system whcih i spent a bomb on.
