BSOD with USB Memory Card insertion

    Sounds rude don't it, lol...?

Seriously though, whenever I insert my memory card into my USB Card Reader the PC BSOD's and restarts. Next boot screen tells me that windows recovered from a serious error.

The drives (it detects 4 in the card reader) show as fine after reboot and the photos can be uploaded via my transfer software.

This happens when I inseret the card INTO the reader plugged into one of the USB ports on the SIDE of my PC (not one of those built in to the back). I haven't tried it there, in case it fries something.

I'm worried I might damage my computer for one.

I'm worried I might damage my Compact Flash card and lose valuable photographs.

    Any ideas?

    Current set-up as follows:

ASUS M2N motherboard, 4GB DDR2 Ram, 320Gb Sata drive, NVidia 8800 GT graphics board.

    Thanks in advance.

what version of windows you running?

also have you tried it on another computer to see if it does the same thing. i would suggest a disposable computer to be safe

Re: BSOD with USB Memory Card insertion

It is probably something broken with the USB handling in Windows.

My laptop had the problem of BSOD upon return from sleep if my USB HDD got disconnected without safe removal just prior to sleep.

Reinstalled Windows and the problem is gone.

Perhaps one of the workaround is just to keep that cardreader plugged in? Just buy another one if you need it elsewhere.

Try the typing the following command into the command prompt.

    regsvr32 usbmon.dll

It's possible the problem is as simple as a corrupt DLL file and this should, in theory, fix it.

I typed it and this prompt appeared:

usbmon.dll was loaded, but the DllRegistryServer entry point was not found.

    This file cannot be registered.

    *EDIT*

I plugged in my Sandisk Cruzer Jump Drive and that worked perfectly, so it appears to be when I connect a memory card only.

Re: BSOD with USB Memory Card insertion

What does the blue screen error actually say?
Do the following to stop it automatically rebooting when it bluescreens:

Right-click on "My Compter" and select "Properties", then select the "Advanced" tab and click on the "Settings" button under "Startup and Recovery".
Deselect the check-box that says "Automatically restart" under the "System Failure section"

Re: BSOD with USB Memory Card insertion

It's a bad USB driver - XP has a horrible USB stack that's prone to failure if one bad driver is in there. Try inserting the card prior to bootup - then see if it works when booted. It often does, because the drivers will load in a different order.

Viper81's instructions are a good place to start in locating the faulting driver.

Re: BSOD with USB Memory Card insertion

This sounds like you may have to reinstall XP, I had a similar issue with a vista install, something to do with the updating software went belly up and in the end I had to reinstall vista again which fixed it. You could try either a chkdsk or an install on top of itself.

    Good luck

The usbmon.dll *should* be in c:\Windows\system32

open up a command prompt, type cd\ and press enter, then cd windows and press enter, then cd system32 and press enter

then try retyping the regsvr32 usbmon.dll.

Of course if the file is missing, that might well explain why it's crashing
