Can anyone help with an HD DVD drive problem: with HD discs, always asks for restart...does not recognisHD. New laptop Acer 9815WKHi. Considered firmware update, but Tosh site appears closed for firmware updates. Found HP firmware update for this drive; but not sure about using it; a warning against use was flagged.
Ideas will be appreciated!!
HD is essentially a dead format now - which is probably why Toshiba have stopped supporting the drives with firmware updates. I would be wary if using an HP firmware, unless the HP drive is a rebadged Toshiba OEM device - even then there might be differences in the hardware which would make the firmware incompatable.
On the other hand, the drive seems pretty much unuseable as it stands, so you could argue that you have little to lose.
As it is a new laptop, have you tried contacting Acer for support?

Many thanks Peter for your comments, yes, will contact Acer asap......this laptop is only 6 days old and should surely work straight out of box!
Yes! Unless you have a compelling reason for HD, try and get that changed foe Blu Ray. But either way, if they sell you something, it should work out of the box. Where did you get it from? That may be a better first approach as it is that new.

Got it from EASY COMPUTERS T/AS LAPTOPSDIRECT. Wanted tosh hd as have a collection of hd movies.
...........and truth be known, intend to connect hd laptop to hd tv.
Know anything about supplier? appeared reputable outfit; guess will soon know!
