Any PC2-6400 ram will be fine, if you can get 4-4-4-12 stuff then that better
If you are buying from scan then the corsair is fine...

The corsair 520W PSU will be enough unless you want to run 2 graphics cards

All look a bit cheap and naff to me. I don't touch MSI and try to steer clear of gigabyte where possible, although they seemed to have remdemed themselves recently.

If you do want P45, so far this is the only cheap one I would buy
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

Looks ok, pretty basic feature set but not too bad. The Abit IP-35 PRO still seems the better buy to me at the same price (£85 on scan today only today).

    Right...

I know you're probably losing interest but your guidance is very much appreciated

    I think I've settled on:

    P182 case
    E8400 processor
    Abit IP-35, Dark Raider Mobo
TruePower Trio 550W (Unless Antec isn't classed as *good quality* power, only choosing it as it's £13 cheaper)
    Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA-II HDD

I've been looking at RAM and have tried to research some of the terms used

The set with latencies of 4-4-4-12 isn't Non-ECC Unbuffered, does this matter? The third option is only really there as a cheaper alternative (looks a bit naff).

Whichever set of RAM I go for it should come it at round about £400, leaving me £200 to splash out on one of the spiffy new GPUs

Also on the 9600 series you could get something like a 1GB 9600GT XFX card for a little more, £141.46, and this has the advantage of 1GB of memory, and a clock speed of 650MHz GPU, and 1800MHz memory.

If you are willing to stretch your budget a bit, then you could get a 9800 card, such as the 512MB XFX 9800 GTX XT, which has a 720MHz GPU, and a memory speed of 2200MHz. This card has 128bit pipelines, which is double the 9600 cards, and comes at a slightly higher price of £203.25.

It is a bit more, but I would be tempted to go for the latter of the cards
Come on ..... you are misleading him now.
THe 8800GTS G92 is a superior card to the 3870. Forget the clock speed.

Re: Advice appreciated on new build

That power supply (as most of antec's) is pretty good as far as I know. I'd prefer the corsair HX I think but it won't hurt to get that.

Interestingly you could get the Antec Sonata plus which comes with a modular version of that PSU in the antec solo case. It's around £100 and it's cooling is similar to the P182 and it's even better for noise Just a thought to annoy you now you have picked

RAM wise I would probably go with these
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

the super talent looks so cheap I couldn't trust it and the DHX corsair modules are so freakin tall it's scary. Tall RAM can cause problems with certain cpu coolers so I would stick to the standard xms2 and sacrifice the lactency which, is not noticeable on intel chips anyway

Re: Advice appreciated on new build

Well, it does annoy me a tad, as I don't think it's as good looking a case as the P182, and it's not as big (Some reviews I read had users struggling to fit GPUs in and these new ones could be even bigger than what's out now).

But, I can get it from this shop in Canada for £55. That's almost £70 cheaper than the P182 and Antec PSU I'd chosen.

    Damn you

    (But still thank you! )

Re: Advice appreciated on new build

Well, I'm off on my travels tomorrow, hopefully coming back with all my new hardware (minus the case, as I've realised it will be too big to fit inside the largest suitcase I own - and this after they've reduced the price even further!)

Just wanted to run a final couple of things past your good selves - I've got an acer 17" monitor which didn't cost the earth. I don't know the exact model but I think it's 1-2 years old and I'm happy with it. Just been into display settings and the max resolution available is 1280 x 1024 - is it worth my spending on one of the new cards about to be released? I was leaning towards the 4870 from early reports (or the 4850 depending on prices) but as a monitor upgrade is some way off the top of my list of things to do, will it be worth it if these new GPUs lead to price-drops in older ranges?

I had been leaning toward http://www.atic.ca/index.php?page=LongDesc&sku=49903 before being advised to wait for the new cards release.

Also, I was going to replace the stock cooler on the cpu to a Scythe Ninja Plus Rev B Fanless HeatPipe cooler.

Thanks again for all your helpful advice, it really has been much appreciated
