uTorrent

Hi I was wondering if someone knew of a solution for this, I put utorrent on my laptop and I have lots of torrents running, but while this is happening, i can't use the net? firefox takes ages to respond/ages to load (around five minutes). and same with IE i think. But the torrents are running at full speed.

Any ideas on what settings i need to change? im using vista home premium and a net
gear wireless router.

Stop some/most of the torrents and it should work

You need to go to options>preferences>BitTorrent and then an option called protocol encryption and set that to forced and tick allow incoming legacy connections. That did the trick for me

ermm, could be - i'll check the setting.

do the amount of torrents running matter? i had loads running, but they are all relatively small files (like desktop background/wallpapers).

Well if each is making connections then it will slow down your internet. If the torrents are just sitting there idle then it doesn't matter. To rephrase it the number of active torrents matters

lower the upload rate considerably, its not a very good idea to run lots at once, your ratio will get hammered and you wont be very much liked on trackers

Uploading too much chokes off your connection's ability to acknowledge and request downloads.

Uploading too little flags you as a leech.

In some cases it can be a problem with too many connection, but not usually. Obviously if you have too many torrents running at once then you will only be uploading a limited amount to peers on the different torrents, meaning that you will get lower priority with those peers and your download speed will slow.

You need to find the perfect balance in order to get the best download speeds on uTorrent. When running uTorrent I generally have my upload set to 4-5kbps slower than it's max speed and would only run a maximum of 2-3 torrents at a time.

I checked, it's set at 200 connections, i lowered it to 100, still the same thing though, i'll lower it further.

one thing i forgot to to mention in my 1st post, even if my upload limit is set low (like 5kb) firefox still goes slow...and now i've removed alot of the torrents (only 5/6 running). still the same though.

i cant even really say firefox is slow, there is just no response, until like every five minutes. otherwise it's just a blank page.

lol yes even if i exit utorrent...it still has no response, for a little while after, or until i reset the laptop. could it have something to do with UPnP and the router?

utorrent was fine at first im pretty sure! it happened after there was alot of torrents opened.

im gonna delete it 2moro if anything.

All you need to do is use encryption, I said that right in the beginning! The reason it is so slow is because your ISP can see you are downloading from a flagged source so they cut your other traffic to encourage you to stop.

All you need to do is force encryption which stops them from being able to track your torrent downloads and therefore not allow them to restrict your internet access. Basically you hide the location of your source so for all they know it could be from a site such as fileplanet which is perfectly acceptable.

Edit* i've cut all torrents now out expect for one and enabled encryption, i'm getting some progress.

Its not encryption fixing it if you were getting full speed with all the torrents... its probably your router not liking loads of connections and then taking its time to get back to normal after you disconnect...

yea actually I'm really not sure - because uTorrent works without encryption on my main PC. So its something weird going on here with this laptop.

Google for the solution to Vista's tcpip.sys half-open TCP connection limit. You have to patch tcpip.sys and perhaps a registry entry, too. It's pretty much essential if you will be doing heavy torrenting.

Symptoms would be errors from the tcpip service in the "system" event log saying that connection limits have been reached.
