Use one RAM stick for intalling OS?

    Newbie question

When installing the operating system on a new build is it best to only have 1 stick on ram connected? An then add the rest after a sucessful install?

I will be installing Ubuntu 8.04, but would like to know for Vista aswell (as plan to dual boot with Ulimate 64 once I have to money for it and the extra RAM, HDD etc)

    I have 2x1gb Corsair XMS2 PC6400. using a GA-P35-DS£R (once it arrives!!!)

    thanks

Re: Use one RAM stick for intalling OS?

Normally I would only use one stick of ram to boot if I had a problem and was doing diagnostics to resolve the problem.

Have always just stuck the ram in and up she fires.....just make sure you double check everything when building and it should be fine

Never heard that one before. Some people do have some problems installing Vista when they have e.g. 4x 1GB sticks of RAM (I personally didn't). Just put all the RAM in and install

Yup, just install and fire away. Works most of the time.

There is no reason to use one stick unless you are trouble shooting

Re: Use one RAM stick for intalling OS?

    better still....

get Mem Test on CD or floppy...and run that before the install. With both sticks,

If it's ok....then you're fine. I run Mem Test in EVERY new build, because buggered ram is a pain in the bum to suss....and it can ruin a perfectly good install right at the end.

    Preparation is always good.

    http://www.memtest.org/

Download the image - burn it to CD and boot from the resultant CD.
