    Internet and Newtwork Issues...

Don't know if i should post this in here, or in the networking section, but anyway...

Basically after a powercut yesterday the router cut out - and would not allow anything to connect again until the next day; upon which point everything can conneect in the house - including a desktop, 3 laptops, and my xbox 360 - except my desktop; which instead shows that the network is connected; and allows me to ping other computers, and the router; in the network; but will not allow me access to the internet; but will not allow me to ping websites - when trying to ping the bbc site, first through its ip, and secondly its web address, all 4 packets sent are unable to reach the destination. The problem occurs for all browsers, and all other programmes which use the internet, eg MSN and Windows Live Mail, and is still present when the firewall is both on and off.

I beleive this is not a hardware issue as the USB Wireless dongle I ues on my desktop is working fine, as I am using it on this laptop to type this message.

    Thanks for the help,
    Sith_Lords

If you can connect to internet sites using the IP address rather than the domain name, it is a DNS resolution problem.

Check the DNs settings in the router which should be set to act as a DNS relay (relaying the DNS information from your ISP's DNS servers. If they are down, you could try using the openDNS settings.

Open DNS IP addresses are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

on the system that does not connect go to the command prompt and type IPconfig and post up what you get.

No default gateway is your problem. Setup a static address in the network card properties and add the IP of your router as the default gateway.

Or set up the4 router's DHCP server so it hands out both IP addresses and the parameters for the Windows machines - which will include the default gateway.

As this problem occurred after the router cut out (in your original post) it is more likely that the router settings have been lost or corrupted and you should check that it is set up as you wish - then go back to the PCS and check again that you have connectivity.

Seconded. It has nowhere to route the packets...........

I agree - but there are two ways to fix this - either manually set up the TCP/IP parameters on each PC connected to the router - or correctly set up the router's DHCP server so that it correctly hands out IP addresses and the correct parameters (including the default gateway address - its own - the the client PCs. At the same time this would ensure that DNS relay is also set up correctly.

Login to your router and make sure that DHCP server is active, then check that it's handing out the correct details. Obviously you'd need to do this from the machine that can connect to it.

    Assign the IP address
To set a static IP address:

    1. Open Windows Start menu.
    2. Open Control Panel.
    3. Classic view: Open Network Connections
Category view: Select Network and Internet Connections, and then Network Connections.
    4. Double-click on your active LAN or Internet connection.
    5. Click Properties.

This opens the Local Area Connections Properties window.

    6. In the General tab, highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item, and click Properties.

This opens the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.

    7. In the General tab, click Use the following IP address, and enter: - IP address. The static IP address you want to assign to this computer.
    - Subnet mask. Subnet mask used by your router.
    - Default gateway. IP address of your router's default gateway.

    8. In Use the following DNS server addresses, enter all the IP addressses for the DNS servers your router uses.

    9.Click OK.

(For you it will be - IP Address: 192.168.0.2, Subnet mast: 255.255.255.0, Default gateway: The IP of your router,DNS server should also be your router.)
    Then:
    10. Click OK to close each window.
    11. Restart your computer. (not really needed but can solve some issues)
    12. Then, check your IP address again, to make sure that the changes were applied.

If the above works then go back into the TCP/IP properties and change "Use the Followinf IP address:" to "obtain an IP address automatically" Click ok and see if your router has asigned your system an IP via DHCP, if it has your good to go, if you get no internet again just go back to step 1 above.
