    I have fixed my issue, by flashing the by now infamous Asus Top Bios Rev 01.

    Fantastic stuff.

    Not only that - I've had a large performance increase, too.

    Idle temps are around 50°C, which is where I was previously getting all my crashes (at idle, not 50°!).

    Big thumbs up from me.

    Re: 4870 black screen high fan RPM problem - anyone else had this?

    Okay, update on this - yes, it has been an improvement over the stock BIOS, but now after 4 days my games are freezing up. No system crash, just games now - which, with the stock BIOS, were not affected - only crashes at idle, when starting or closing a program on the desktop.

    So, it's time for me to reflash the original card BIOS, and go back to the e-tailer to see about a replacement, as it seems this is not as widespread as first thought. Or at least not something that ATi or MS seem interested in sorting out.

    <sigh>

Anyone have any thoughts?

    "Go into advanced in the bios and set ai overclocking(its at the top) to manual.Now go down the list to pci-e frequency,set it to 105.go further down the list to north bridge voltage,set it to 1.4.Reboot and see if that fixes it.

    To you tpu guys,this is a well known error on the p5b/p5k series,there is lots about this in a p5b thread on xs forum."
