Re: i need help with my 1st build
I would go for a E7200 processor and get a HD 4870 graphic card. Should cost about the same.
I have just moved from a E7200 to a Q6600 and they are exactly the same in speed for gaming and standard stuff. You only need the quad if you specifically want it for heavy multitasking or apps designed for more than 2 cores.
Re: i need help with my 1st build
Changing my mind about the P45 motherboards lol, none of them seem that great yet. Abit IP-35 PRO seems the better buy still.
If you are planning on crossfire I just wouldn't bother and go straight for the HD4870. Anything below 1920 x 1200 though and you might as well just get one HD4850.
Q6600 is a great chip and it should get better with age, certainly better than the dual cores. If you only plan on keeping the chip a short while though and don't need the extra flexability of the quad then the dual core is a good option, especially the E7200 as above.
Re: i need help with my 1st build
I would advise to get a Lite-on retail dvd burner instead of the sony as the Lite-on retail comes with Nero burning software bundled with it.
I would also advise picking up Windows XP Pro instead of Home
Otherwise, everything else appears fine
Re: i need help with my 1st build
As above re XP and the CPU although I'd go the whole hog and order the 64bit XP. With storage being so cheap perhaps a 500Gb Samsung hard drive might be in order. You will have a silky smooth PC there :) Good luck.
Re: i need help with my 1st build
Windows XP Home is only 32-bit, so you wont get all the 4.5GB of memory (4GB from memory, and 0.5 from GPU). As a result of this I would go for a 64-bit OS, like XP Pro-64, or Vista-64.
I would get at least a 320GB hard drive...but everything else looks gr8 - i just ordered the same CPU, Mobo, and GPU, and Memory on sunday night:D
Re: i need help with my 1st build
Your build looks a bit like the one I'm thinking to get, though if I were you I would get a bigger HD (like mine =p) and if you're planning on using the 4 GB of memory be sure you get a 64-bit OS.

Dead easy to overclock to, even a lowly ecologist can do it :embarrassed:
3Ghz with very little tweaking :rockon2:
Re: i need help with my 1st build
At this very moment, which would be better? The E8400 or the Q6600? And what would be better in the future? (my guess the Q6600 =p)
Re: i need help with my 1st build
Agreed about the 64bit OS but absolutely don't get XP-64, there's just no support for it, just go for Vista Home Premium 64bit.

I certainly wounldn't buy an optical drive based on the burning software that comes with it. Nero these days is a bloated corpse, and there are far superior burning programs available free (IMGBurn and CDBurnerXP come to mind)
Re: i need help with my 1st build
No Vista 32bit will not support 4Gb, but it won't break either, it just won't use any of it above 3Gb or so.
Vista 64bit will support 4Gb (and over) and you shouldn't run into any problems with it.
XP 64bit will also support 4Gb but you'll probably find it very difficult (if not impossible) to get much of the rest of your hardware and software working properly on it.
And the Lite On writer looks fine.
