Whenever you get random events always suspect the memory. I recently built a system with 2GB of Corsair DDR2 (XM2 series) which kept crashing and after many frustrating nights finally realised it was the memory! Does your PC boot up into windows?
Check your temps. Could be your PC auto shutting down to prevent ur CPU from being damaged.
Search for coretemp if you have not got a thermal monitoring appl;ication already and report back

run memtest 86+ overnight to check the RAM for errors (search on google-download-burn to disc-boot from disc)
seconded if I remember right a psu issue will result in restart, mem issues tend to cause crashes/freezes as oppose to power off.
watch temp monitor in bios when you boot up the intel stock hs/f can appear to be fitted properly but be slightly loose on 1 corner resulting in poor contact hence high temps leading to a mobo auto shut down. should be able to find average stock temps for your cpu via google.
My new PC does this as well - freezes briefly before resetting. I havent narrowed it down yet, but I think mine might be the memory. Do you have Vista or XP?
From what I've gathered this is starting to look like a ram problem within vista.
Apologies - if it actually closes down properly then it is probably doing so to protect against overheating.
ok running super pi it maxes out at about 60C but it didnt turn off, its really confusing me, im gona check my heatsink if it happens again. any other views?
your not overclocking are you?
take a stick of RAM out and see what happens...
could the ram be causing it to randomly restart from windows?
and no im not overclocking
ok im almost 99% sure its the processor as when i did a system test it crashes on the processor part
Try reseating it mate.
i've done that already, im at the stage where i feel like just leaving it down a pcstore n seeing what they can do
Is it possible you can swap psu or motherboard to cehck if they are faulty?
Try disbaling auto shutdown temp in bios too
piece of crap intel stock heatsink, why give u a heatsink that doesnt touch all the chip i dont understand that :S
went out and bout an artic cooler 7 for £14 in my local pc store fitted it and now no problems,
crysis on high/ultra high with an oc processor for the win
Nice one. Glad you got it sorted.
Need helppppp!!! I've build my new Pc:
Asus Maximus formula
Core 2 Duo e8400
Saphirre HD4850
HyperX 2Gb 1066 5-5-5-15
Saegate 500Gb 32Mb Sata2
Powercooler 500w
and it randomly turns off even before booting Windows. Sometimes it turns off when i'm at the bios, sometimes when it's booting and sometimes at windows. I'm thinking it's a mother or PSU problem, waht are your suggestions. Also the CPU temp at the bios is 100°C but i touch the heatsink and it's only warm, one of my case's sensors says it's only 35°C. I've tried changing to the last bios at the asus webpage and it's still happening. Thanks
