Windows XP SP3 Read-Only Folders
Lo all,
Having a prob, all my shared folders are read-only. I set them as not read-only and apply, then ok; and then when I go back into Properties, they are read-only again!
I think this is why I cannot access the shared folders from my laptop across the network.
Can anyone help? I really need to be able to access and edit files on my desktop from my laptop!
Re: Windows XP SP3 Read-Only Folders
do you have simple file sharing enabled?
is the account on the laptop an administrator account, do they have the same username/password - what login credentials are you using?
you may have to set the permissions (under the security/sharing tab once you've disabled simple file sharing) so that the laptop user has Full Control...
alternatively, can the desktop user see/access/modify files on the laptop?

It doesn't work with and without simple file sharing.
Both the desktop and laptop login as admin, no password. The desktop can access and create a new folder on the laptop, even though the laptop folder permission is read-only.
I can get my head around it :( why can my desktop write to the laptop, but the laptop can't write to the desktop (can't even open files).
I have also tried with and without my firewall and anti-virus on.
Re: Windows XP SP3 Read-Only Folders
Are you talking share level permissions or NTFS level permissions? Also where are the folders that you're talking about located in the file structure?

Share Level Permissions. It all used to work fine, then I think I installed SP3 onto both my desktop and Laptop. I didn't bother sorting it out because I though it was my router that was the problem. Got a new router and it still didn't work and just noticed that the folders are consistently Read-Only.
All the folders are on my E drive so for example E:\Applications.
Just checked my gf's laptop, and she has the Read-Only problem too and she also has SP3.
Re: Windows XP SP3 Read-Only Folders
Well after a lot of trail and error, I found the problem to be in the settings of my NIC. I had set it to 100mps Full Duplex, and changing it to Auto solved all my problems. I can now access and edit files on my desktop from my laptop (even though the folders are "Read Only"). Why arn't PC's just simple lol.
