Fed up with AV problems - need specific

    Hey Guys

I'm totally fed up with the problems I've had that were caused by over-zealous anti-virus programs.

Over the years I've tried many different ones but they all have their shortcomings - some worse than others - and some I've been prepared to put up with.

The first couple of years on the www I didn't use one at all.

To date I've had 0 infections, many false positives and two pretty low-level spyware instances.

Now I've finally had enough, though. I'd like to have an anti-virus program that doesn't run in the background and/or check everything I do etc - one that either simply integrates into my shell so that when I want, for example, some downloaded files scanning I can do that using my right-click menu or one that I can start up to scan files then close down afterwards would be okay.

Anyone know any such progs that do specifically what I want, as described above?

Sounds like you want Clamwin. Does exactly what you're asking for.

Personally I prefer to have on-access scanning, but for manual scanning Clam is pretty much the daddy (and free to boot)

I'll give that a try - looks as you say, like the very thing...

    Thanks.

If its downloaded files your worried about some download managers not only quarantine all downloads but they also have virus scanners too
