Asus M2N 32 SLI strange noises, now wont boot
Hi,
One of my first posts... so hopefully i've got this in the right section! Nice to meet you all, i've been reading your forums for some time, mainly the reviews, and its been really useful!
I've got one of the aforementioned, in conjuction with:
Hiper 530W Type-M psu
AMD Athlon 64X2 6000+ at 3Ghz (no overclocking)
2GB ram (corsair xms2 ddr2)
BFG 8800GTS
couple of dvd drives
seagate 500gb HDD
Vista
Its been working fine and stable for about 8 months, yet when i powered it up yesterday evening, it emitted a loud screaming noise. Obviously, i turned it off straight away, and checked all the wiring, component seatings etc, but nothing seemed wrong. It was suggested to me that my power supply was dead, so i tried it in another motherboard yet it seemed fine (booted etc). Plugging it back in my motherboard, the green power light comes on on the board, but it now refuses to boot at all (not even any fans come on when the button on the case is pressed). I've tried all the external components (ram, gpu etc) in another board (admittedly an intel based board), and they work fine, but i haven't got another AM2 board to hand to test the CPU. Any suggestions?! Currently i fear the worst for my motherboard...!
Thanks,
Washdogg
p.s. sorry to go on, but i thought you'd like as much detail as possible!
Re: Asus M2N 32 SLI strange noises, now wont boot
The screaming noise sounds like your graphics card isn't getting enough power. Try different card if you have one, you say you've tried the psu in another system, try it with the graphics in as well see if it boots.
Re: Asus M2N 32 SLI strange noises, now wont boot
yep, i've tried both these things, tried an 8800GT in my board, to no avail, though no screaming. My 8800GTS is currently sitting in a computer working fine. Interestingly the screaming seems to have ceased altogether, but still no booting.
Thanks for the suggestion!
edit:
I've also tried to boot the board with just the cpu/cooler and a stick of ram, and it wont do anything in that case either, the cpu cooler doesn't even spin up.
Re: Asus M2N 32 SLI strange noises, now wont boot
You've most likely tried it but clear the CMOS with every thing back in see if it boots. If not its ether chip or board which is hard to find out which without another amd motherboard.
Re: Asus M2N 32 SLI strange noises, now wont boot
good point, i'll try that, n give it a go. Presume removing the battery is the course of action of choice to make sure it works?
Re: Asus M2N 32 SLI strange noises, now wont boot
Right, so i tried that, and its made no difference. Presumably next option is to send the mobo back to the manuf (i presume its still covered under warranty - would this come under the warranty if its just stopped working?) or just get a new one? Though as you say it might be the cpu - i dont think i've ever heard of them screaming then dieing...
