INNO3D 8800GT - something is stuck in it....

I recently got an INNO3D 8800GT OC (about 2-3months ago) and all has been fine till 3 days ago when I turned away from my computer for about 10mins turned back and no image on my monitor....checked all connections, opened the case and the GPU fan had stopped so I immediately turned off the system and checked the card.

I removed the card out my case and gave it a de-dusting and found something still to be making the fan......rub, as in, when I turn the fan manually it seemed to be sticking a little bit. After turning the fan the opposite way it was meant to I found a piece of hair coming out so I removed this and tried the card again and success the fan started working but it now makes a some of a "ticking" noise if I had to describe it. And according to RivaTuner the temp has gone up 2°C, so I think something maybe still stuck in there. Anyone have any idea how I might go about trying to remove what ever it is that is stuck?

Pull the card out, put on static free work area, carefully remove the screws to fan and fan brackets, noting their location on paper, carefully disabled the fan noting all part locations on paper. Find and remove the pollutant. Then carefully reassemble the fan and bracket in reverse to your dissembly.

NOTE: Doing this most likely voids your warranty if you have one. So if you do have one just send it to the company to fix, if they will cover that, you should contact them for RMA first.

Good advice above - As for voiding the warranty, you will only really do that if it is obvious that it has been tampered with - either by removing tamper-dertect stickers, or if you make a mess of the dis-assembly. Use the correct size screwdriver, and when re-assembling it, make sure you don't cross thread any of the screws.

or...turn it upside down, shake it and blow into it, thats the technical way to do it!

Rather than blow which would moisten the board from microscopic saliva particles,
moisture/static free compressed air would be a better choice.

That would solve the spit issue but might raise another, slightly worse problem!

Re: INNO3D 8800GT - something is stuck in it....

Hey guys, thanks for all your replies. The problem seems to have somehow sorted itself out. Temp is back down and the noise has disappeared.

Once again thanks for the suggestions.
