Re: Problems with my new PC
Sounds like an overheating problem to me - did you buy the system pre-built from ocuk or did you just buy the parts and build it yourself?
If you bought it from them as a complete system, then call their support line and get them to fix it (ignore what i'm sure lots of people will say about OCUKs service, they should still be your first port of call).
If you built it yourself then your options are more limited..first thing I would do is install a fan monitoring tool such as motherboard monitor and look at the temps - enable logging so that you can see how they change from being in windows to actually playing games. If you see the temps climb constantly when your playing games and never level out (ie it doesnt stop at for example, 60) then you probably do have a temp problem.
The next step would be to open the case (while the computer is off), and then turn it on. Check that all the fans are spinning - particularly the graphics card fan. If it all appears to be working fine, and it looks like there is enough airflow around the case, the the next step I would take would be to check all your case fans (if any) - here you are checking that they are attached the correct way round, so that on one side of your case they are bringing air in, and that on the other they are pushing air out. Which direction this should be will depend on your case and setup.
The last thing I can suggest from a physical POV would be to remove the CPU fan, clean the cpu and heatsink, re-apply thermal paste and then re-attach the fan/heatsink. If there was a thermal pad on before then chuck it away and get some proper thermal paste - the pads are useless at conducting heat.
Re: Problems with my new PC
It was a pre-built from OCUK so I will give them a call first of all - I just didn't really want the hassle of sending it back - although I don't live all that far from where they are based so I will probably drive it up but i'll have to wait until the weekend.
Shame really the first day I played spore I didn't encounter this problem - although I assume the latter stages of the game do require a bit more power to be used
Thanks for the quick reply.
Re: Problems with my new PC
Ah you have just given me another possibility - rather than heat, it could be power related...if there are no warranty stickers or anything that could let them know you have been inside, it could be worth opening the case and making sure that the PCI Express power cable is properly connected to your graphics card - lots of cards will work fine with it disconnected but will fail when put under stress.
Probably not the cause but its something else to check :)
Re: Problems with my new PC
if you can I would take it in in person.... you know what OCUK are like, i'm shocked you actually bought from them
Re: Problems with my new PC
Ive never actually bought anything from them previously - but my mate has and he has nothing but good things to say about their service

Dont worry, take it back to them and sit on their heads until they get it done. They have to fix it as its under warranty.
Have you tried any other games?
Re: Problems with my new PC
Just Spore and WoW so far - I'm reluctant to really get inside the case - even if it dosnt break the warranty as I know generally my way around but It'd be more trouble than its worth - i'll put up with it until Saturday then go take it back and see if they can fix it
Thanks for the suggestions though :)
Re: Problems with my new PC
I have run a few programs - namely CPU-Z and HWMonitor - a friend has explained the heating doesnt seem to be a problem - would anyone have the time to take a look and maybe explain my problem ? I don't wanna go to OCUK and get fobbed off with them saying nothing is wrong with it
Re: Problems with my new PC
heres his temps and volts (not stressed)

Its a sexy machine, and considering its a 4870x2; sub 70 degrees isn't bad.
I don't get the voltages myself tbh, but nothing screams out to me. Anyone know where to get a good memtest program also *just for checking sake*?
Re: Problems with my new PC
Re: Problems with my new PC
Could be memory, run memtest.
Have you tried running 3dmark 06 or Vantage?
Open the pc up and see if there are any lose cables, connectors, etc
Re: Problems with my new PC
I ran memtest - no problems whatsoever. I also dl and ran 3dmark 06 as you suggested, I don't really know how to read these results so i'll post them up here and any pointers would be grateful...

Re: Problems with my new PC
No luck popping to OCuk then mate?
Is it still giving you grief on the games then? Check inside, see if the graphics card or memory needs reseating.
I'll pop your pressie down in the week before we go out ok?
Re: Problems with my new PC
Its good that you were able to run 3dmark06 successfully, but that score of 12000 seems a bit low, I would expect you to get around 18000.

Yeah seems the CPU score and SM2 and 3 scores are quite low.
