    New build - no sound!

Just installed my old hardware onto some newer stuff, namely my rig is now:

    C2D E2160
    2GB XMS2 DDR2 PC6400
    Palit 8800GT
    DFI Lanparty JR P45-T2RS
    Plus hard drives and opticals

Windows installed fine, the usual age to update and so on. But i'm faced with the problem that i have no audio.

I've installed Realtek drivers, it notices when i plug/unplug the speaker jacks but no sound at all comes out. I've tried all the ports, including the front panel.

    Any ideas?

EDIT: It's now working, but front panel only..

Re: New build - no sound!

Hi i had a similar problem before.
This is how i got mine sorted.
Uninstall realtek drivers along with the software.Restart the computer.
And then install the drivers only by browsing the CD when it asks for the missing driver files.
Restart again and this time the sound should be working.
    Hope that helps.

Re: New build - no sound!

if you goto control panel and check the hardware and sounds, see if you have a list of working devices. if you do then test each of them, if it works then set it as default restart and things should work. not sure why but i had the same issue, no noise after install. hopefully it works for you good luck mate

Re: New build - no sound!

    Start|Run|devmgmt.msc
Make sure there isn't any yellow exclamation marks or red cross marks under "Sound, video and game controllers"

    Next
    Start|Run|dxdiag
Click yes if a message box appears
Click on Sound tab and see if you get any error messages under Notes.
    Test Directsound

    Use another speaker or earphones?

    Ok, i'll try the above!

    New problem now though.

    Task manager.. DOES NOT EXIST!

I mean it's not in the start menu, it's not even as an application in the windows folder.

    Any idea?

    OS?

    Vista or XP?

    XP -> Ctrl + Alt + Del

Vista -> Ctrl + Shift + Esc or right click taskbar and click Task Manager (same applies to XP)

Realtek.... Ugh I always try to avoid them when getting a board. Their drivers are really gay. In XP they block you from changing the mic volume as in it's greyed out. Really annoying stuff.

I do know the key combo - bloody cheek

It doesn't work! Hence why i did a search for the application directly. Currently running nod32 and spybot to see if anything's done stuff to it.

The windows folder is usually C:\WINDOWS make sure you check in there!

Cheekyness aside did you check in the system32 folder for it? (Seeing as you said Windows folder only)

How can your taskmanager be gone on a fresh install. You haven't infected your install already have you? nLited the install somehow? Very weird.

Re: New build - no sound!

I have no idea to be honest!

It didn't happen last time i installed XP (same disc and everything - literally the same computer just a fresh install with the new hardware), i've done a few sweeps and nothing's come up save the usual ad tracking cookies.

I'm going to give repairing XP a shot.

Yeah, i checked the folder + a search for the exe.

    ============

OK, i sorted it by simply copying the app from the XP disc into C:\WINDOWS\ and it worked without even a reboot.

I guess for some retarded reason it didn't copy correctly, and crtl alt del still worked - just it couldn't find the file it seems.

(C.A.D worked along with the no reboot)

Another one of those things that just shouldn't work.. but hey!

Is there a way to check if important stuff like this is installed? Like a general "file" inventory or something?

Also regards to your sound make sure the Windows Audio service is Started. (Start|Run|services.msc)

Check if your Group Policy disabled it

Run sfc /scannow from the run box. You might need the Windows CD in.
