HDCP Confusion

Hi,

I`m currently in the process of putting together a HTPC.
From what I understand, the Player, graphics card, and Monitor need to be HDCP complient.
If my motherboard is HDCP and player is also, then why does the monitor need to be ?
What does the monitor do (DVI fed) in terms of content protection ??

As far as I remember (so take this with a pinch of salt ) if your monitor isn't HDCP compatible then it won't play the media in full HD and will end up down-scaling it in some fashion.

The monitor needs to be HDCP complient so the loop knows where the image is being displayed. If it didn't then you could create a system where by you passed the signal from your graphics card into a digital recorder to record full HD and strip the HDCP from the loop totaly.

Looks like AnyDVD is the easiest and cheepest (£50) way around it.
Although a hardware solution for the monitor would be better.

yeh basically hdcp is the connection used so that u cant copy the dvd but anydvdhd removes this on the fly without losing any resolution but most gpu's nowadays are hdcp compliant as are monitors..
