    Q6600 refuses to be Overclocked

ok now ive got my ACF7 cooler and temps sorted out (he says whilst checking everest) i thought i would go into the bios and put the FSB to 333MHZ and the voltage to just over 1.3V but even before i can run anything in windows the system restarts and the oc fails (which it didn't do even when the cores were running into the nineties) now they were running at 50C underload so its defo not temps

    what am i doing wrong

Re: Q6600 refuses to be Overclocked

    Hi there,

Bump your voltage up to about 1.4v, that way you have a bit of headroom, you can always drop it down once youve got your overclock sorted. That voltage will not harm your CPU at all. If that still does not help then do you have the most recent bios for your mobo, the most recent bios for my P45 allowed me to get a much improved OC. Also it may be worth putting your RAM voltage up to 2.1v to aid it overclocking if you have not done so.

Hope that helps, let us know.

    Hawker

Re: Q6600 refuses to be Overclocked

Try overclocking up in increments, starting at stock voltage. Jumping straight to 3Ghz gives you no idea what your CPU is capable of at what voltages.

Re: Q6600 refuses to be Overclocked

Did you remember to drop the memory divider down? If your memory was running at 1066MHz at a FSB of 266 then when you increased the FSB to 333 the memory frequency jumped to 1335MHz which is unlikely to be stable for your memory. In fact if it boots I guess you have not done this.

So only thing I can suggest is set the memory divider to 1:1 so your memory will be running at 667 DDR and as Hawker says is up the voltage to 1.4v and see if it is stable then, if it is lower the voltage until it is unstable and then put it back up a step.

Oh and you may want to move in stages so maybe try a FSB of 300MHz rather than jumping straight to 333

Re: Q6600 refuses to be Overclocked

    Thx

ive put the fsb to 300 for the time being and the voltage of cpu is 1.375 and DDR2 is set to 601MHZ (given that with 333MHZ fsb the ram was set to 667MHZ hope this is ok)

How long should i leave it 2.70GHZ to then try it at 3GHZ

You need to run Prime95 or similar software for 12 hours to see if your OC is stable before taking it a step further..
you can get Prime 95 from here http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm

Ok this is what I have on my Q6600 Go at 3.2 Ghz on a Foxconn Mars.

    Voltages
    NB Voltage 1.32
    CPU target voltage 1.48
    DRAM voltage 2.11
    CPV VTT voltage 1.27
SB + CPU pull voltage 1.5

Watch your CPU temp, as it will rise with more voltage but on it.

Excellent , got it working at 2.93GHZ (close enough) but are you absolutely sure my ram PC2 1066 should be running at 667MHZ with the cpu OC'ed ??

Re: Q6600 refuses to be Overclocked

the asus board allows you to control the fsb and the ram so you can set it back to 1066 and see how you get on

sounds like you already have it on the unlinked setting.

Re: Q6600 refuses to be Overclocked

i had the exact same issue with one of my Q6600's and my asus P5K premium temperature's where through the roof i was using a freezer pro and Arctic silver 5 and i knew that it wasn't a installation issue it had me pulling my hair out i even sent my CPU back and they sent it back saying there wasn't nothing wrong again i tried it in the asus board and again temps where massive.

I was starting another new build in the lounge using my old E4400 and another new micro atx asus board P5K-VM which was from the same family as my main asus based rig which was a P35 Intel chipset that supposedly fully supported the Q6600 and all other quads because of this reason and checking the site to find it had been supported in the bios from the start i never expected that to be the issue so as a last resort i dropped the quad in to the new matx board and what do you know 28c and rock solid not approaching 80-90c in a few seconds as in my premium board.

Now i knew that the CPU wasn't faulty and i knew the board wasn't as id had the E4400 running at 3GHz for 6months there was only one more thing i could do and that was to upgrade the bios to the latest even though a few people had had issues i felt i didn't have a choice so i flashed it when it rebooted it was 27c it turned out to be the last thing i or anyone else thought it could be even asus where baffled as it had always been supported on that board now I'm running at 3.2GHz at 1.216 and everything else auto and its been rock solid for months in fact i'm going to be asking what i can do to push it further because if it does 3.2GHz at 1.2v it has more to give and the temps are around 34c idle and 45-47c loaded.
