How best to uninstall display drivers?

How best (under vista) is it to uninstall drivers?

I've heard about driversweeper or whatever it is, but not entirely sure as to what it does..

I thought the best way would just be via the add/remove panel?

    I'm confused

If it's an ATI card... the 'ATI Catalyst Uninstaller' would probably suffice.
But yeah... Driver Cleaner/Driver Sweeper are the usual recommendations.

As for how they work... just Google 'em, and the sites will explain it/them

    Uninstall -> Reinstall new one?

If you were switching cards Radeon -> GeForce vice versa then maybe use a driver cleaner but me I'd still uninstall then reinstall. It's always worked for me in the past.

Re: How best to uninstall display drivers?

Hmm, ok. I'm just debating, as the last time i did it they screwed up my games, and everytime i loaded tf2 or something they just crashed. Worked fine with the old drivers - so i'm just a bit dubious over it. If it's not broken don't fix it kind of thing. Well, it is kinda broken cos crysis sometimes crashes and vista tells me to update drivers etc. But still

    Spot on.
I see very few reasons to use a driver cleaner. If you're having major issues, I suppose they are worth a shot though.

Ok here is one for you "display driver" experts

I have a part build pc that I put together a few months back, I then decided I needed the money to be put into other things so took the quad core processor and 8800GT graphics card out ... now I want to put the damn thing back together but would prefer an ATI graphics card as opposed to the Nvidia I had in before - so what would be my best plan of attack

Oh right moogle thanks. So if I start up with the ATI card in safe mode I should be able to uninstall the nvidia drivers??

Re: How best to uninstall display drivers?

Yes the safe mode should load up the generic drivers where you can then uninstall the previous ones. Although you might still be able to boot normally with the nvidia drivers installed if the OS you have does not force the use of the previous drivers.

Thanks for that moogle but just decided to buy the Asus 88800GT that is in the bargain forum for £40 - should slot in perfectly as it was an Asus 8800GT I had in before I pulled the rig apart.

No probs. At least you're well informed on what to do know should you encounter the same situation
